According to E&P, Guy Gilchrist, co-creator of Nancy has started a program called “Cartoonists to Go” which sends professional cartoonists to parties, business gatherings, etc to do portraits and caricatures, cartooning lessons, and temporary tattoos.
The last couple of weeks have been pretty eventful around in Gardner home and when I get squeezed for time, I can’t highlight every story that lands in my inbox. As an attempt to catch some of those things that would normally fall through the cracks, I’m starting a new feature called the Remaindered Links.
The South East Chapter of the National Cartooning Society will be converging on Gainsville (GA) on November 4th for their annual convention (tentative schedule posted on their web site). A selection of artwork by SECNCS members is now on exhibit at Gainsville State College through November 8th.
A study of children’s cartoons find that characters over the age of 55 are portrayed negatively 38% of the time according to a Brigham Young University study which analyzed 45 hours of Saturday morning and after-school programming.
I found this interesting story about Fantagraphics publishing company and how they almost went under back in 2003. The company focuses on publishing collections, comics and graphic novels and by most accounts their passion for the art has attracted some of the best writers and artists such as R. Crumb, Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, Peter Bagge and Chris Ware.
Back in June, I pointed out a comic book challenge that was being held in conjunction with the San Diego Comic-Con. The competition was open to anyone who wanted to submit a comic book idea, complete with sample art. All the submissions would be whittled down to the top 50 by Platinum Studios creative and development staff. Those 50 would then pitch their ideas to a celebrity panel (this part was televised) who picked the top three. Those then were presented to the public for a final winner.
In another “they stole my idea” moment, Gary Huck, a self-syndicated cartoonist, recently noticed one of his cartoon ideas used by Recycled Paper Greetings. According to E&P, he says they’re using his “concept” without permission.
