CSotD: Half a Humpday
Skip to commentsHad a medical thing that involved a nerve block that hasn’t worn off, so I’m typing one-handed. That ought to keep my observations pithy. Yes, of course it’s my left that works. And, no, I’m not lefthanded.
The dog goes everywhere with me, which makes for more exciting reunions on the rare times she doesn’t. Do I spoil her? Why else have one? But it’s okay – she spoils me. There are many levels of selfish, but it’s good karma not to spend all your spoiling on yourself.
My first lover didn’t want kids. We lasted about six weeks, in part because I always had pictured myself as a dad someday. That wasn’t a quarreling point, just an example of how ill-suited we were for each other. But I didn’t take pride in wanting kids and she didn’t take pride in not. I don’t really understand either. It’s like being proud of being tall; it’s just who you are.
It’s also nobody’s business and you can only get in trouble for poking, either way.
This is a much less fraught example of doing your own thing. I don’t understand winter camping, but more power to the folks who like it. But a night out in the woods in good weather seems refreshing to me, as long as it’s quiet. I went to Yellowstone one time and our campsite was next to someone who had a TV on in their camper.
Perhaps they didn’t know about hotels.
Crabgrass rockets back and forth between (among) hijinks, sci fi adventures and real-world kids’ lives, and they’re in one of those latter ones now. Start here. Worth following.
Garthtoons offers some real-world adult stuff. I’d normally run this on an editorial day, but it raises personal as well as political questions. You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows, and there’s no gold watch waiting at the end of 20 years or even 50. Be loyal to your family and yourself, because Corporate isn’t going to be loyal to you.
I say that having had three good jobs go sour when the company was sold to vultures. To quote Zimmerman again, he not busy being born is busy dying. Keep your head on a swivel and your resume updated. Your next adventure is around the corner.
Everybody’s trotting out their Trojan Horse gags, despite the fact that the beast doesn’t appear in Homer’s epic (either of them). I like this one because think how different a world would be if both partners could get pregnant.
And as long as I’m being semi-deep, imagine a world in which writers only wrote about characters they were in a position to understand? Some people have pulled it off, apparently, or at least we’ve accepted their versions. But, really, you can only describe someone as a mirror of yourself — Joyce was a master of that — or in terms of how someone else affects you. Jane Austen wrote about men mostly in how they interacted with the women at the center of her novels. Not sure Flaubert and Tolstoy can make the corresponding claim about their women, and I know writing about different races and cultures is a minefield.
A lot of authors have demonstrated that.
Never jump to conclusions, as long as you have someone you can push into one.
Short entry today. Tune in again when I’ve got two hands.
