New to Comics Kingdom: Beware of Toddler – updated

Beware of Toddler by George Gant will make its Comics Kingdom debut on Father’s Day June 19, 2022, joining a growing list of webcomics on the site that includes Funny Online Animals, Gearhead Gertie, Rae the Doe, #Sales, Kevin and Kell, Safe Havens, and Todd the Dinosaur.

The announcement was made as part of an interview at The Beat.

Just in time to celebrate Father’s Day, the Dad and the Toddler from Beware of Toddler by George Gant are making their debut on Comics Kingdom! New strips of the series will make their debut on the website on Sundays, beginning (appropriately) on June 19th, 2022.

That “new strips” part is important since Beware of Toddler has been around on
the world wide web for a few years now and there is a Webtoon archive too.

From The Beat interview:

Beware of Toddler began as a result of a simple game of hide-and-seek. Once while playing, I hid in a closet thinking that it would take a few minutes for my 2-year-old daughter to find me, hopefully giving me a breather while doing so. I was wrong–she found me immediately, despite this being my first time hiding there. I found it funny enough to draw a comic strip about it.

KAPLAN: Can you tell us about the journey from self-published webcomic to your upcoming Father’s Day debut on ComicsKingdom.com?

GANT:Sure! Though I’ve only been working on Beware of Toddler since 2019, I began drawing webcomics long before that. After discovering webcomics such as Penny Arcade and comic strips like The Boondocks, I felt like it was finally time to create my own, which led to my first two webcomics; The Reset Button and On the Grind. From there, I began drawing all-ages content exclusively, which led to the second iteration of The Reset Button, in addition to various freelance projects. I tried to reboot Reset again, but then that game of hide-and-seek that led to Toddler’s creation occurred. Its success came out of nowhere for me, but I knew it was the thing I needed to focus on moving forward. Since then, the comic has been read by millions and nominated for several awards, including a Ringo. It even won one; a Glyph Comics Award for Rising Star. These, along with the book’s Kickstarter and joining Comics Kingdom, occurred in such a short amount of time that I don’t feel like I’ve fully processed it all yet.

Same day update

Not long after we posted about Beware of Toddler coming to Comics Kingdom Blavity published an essay about the comic strip and the cartoonist by the cartoonist – George Gant.

My name is George Gant. I am the creator of Beware of Toddler, a comic strip about a Black father trying to survive being a stay-at-home parent to his wild two-year-old daughter.

With the rise of online comic strips in the early-to-mid 2000s, it became fairly easy for anyone to create and distribute their comics. While I began my comics journey drawing school newspaper comics, it was here that I began to hone my craft. A lifelong gamer, I used my love for video games as the backdrop for my first webcomic, The Reset Button. Two years later, I created On the Grind, a webcomic that pokes fun at the food service industry loosely based on my experiences working as a barista. On the Grind ran for several years with two book collections published.

A year before I published the first On the Grind collection, I became a father for the first time. As I worked in a chain restaurant and knew we’d spend as much money on daycare as I made in the restaurant, I made a conscious decision to quit my day job and become a stay-at-home parent.

Read the short (he’s still young) autobiography of cartoonist George Gant here.

Recently, it was announced that Beware of Toddler would become a part of King Features Syndicate, with new comics coming to the Comics Kingdom platform. The comic launches on Father’s Day, with brand new comics to be released every Wednesday.
