Indeed, chances are, you’ve never heard of Carol Tyler.
For the past decade, Tyler, now 66, has been doing the best work of her career. Said Chris Ware, arguably the most acclaimed cartoonist of his generation: “She’s given at least two generations of cartoonists the courage to tell our most painful stories, without any muddling skein of vestigial comic-strip irony ameliorating the mix. I consider her absolutely one of the greats with a capital G and know that every time I set brush to paper that I’m somehow also writing with her voice speaking somewhere within me.”
