I don’t have an iPhone, but can’t you just read comic like Dog Eat Doug for free with a webbrowser on the iPhone?

Yeah, you can read any strip published online through a browser on the iPhone. While navigating websites on the phone is pretty easy, it’s nowhere near as smooth and quick as using a proprietary app. That’s the advantage of releasing apps.
The syndicates are also charging for the apps which is a revenue stream versus the free way of reading through the browser. You pay for a slicker experience.
