Charles Schulz drops to 3rd place in top-earning dead celebrity

The list comes out every year and Charles M. Schulz is typically second only to Elvis, but this year’s Forbes list of the Top-Earning Dead Celebrities, Sparky drops to number three as Kurt Cobain comes from out of no where to take the top honor.  Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love sold a 25% stake in Nirvana’s song catalog to a New York music publishing company for a reported $50 million – which put Cobain on the list – at the top.

Interestingly, when you look at the figures, the Peanuts empire has grown from $20 million in revenue in 2001 after Sparky’s death to the reported $35 million last year.

2006 – $35 million
2005 – $35 million
2004 – $35 million
2003 – $32 million
2002 – $28 million
2001 – $20 million

And if you run the numbers, Sparky earns $95,890 a day; $3,995 an hour; $66 a minute; $1.10 a second.

Third place is a rough place to be.

  1. Not that I have any particular dislike for Cobain, I think Peanuts will be remembered long after Nirvana is forgotten.

  2. Agreed. Cobain only got on the list because of that $50 million sale – which is a one time gig. This time next year, he’ll be footnote again.
