Washington Post Writers Group has added Lisa Benson to their portfolio of editorial cartoonists. Lisa, according to E&P, is a freelance artist and graphic designer from Victorville, CA and has drawn local cartoons for the Daily Press since 1992. In an effort to find more information on her, a google search brought up this article from the Daily Press from 2005.
MSNBC editorial cartoonist Daryl Cagle will be lecturing at Wabash College (men’s college in Crawfordsville, IN) where he will give a speech entitled “Being an Editorial Cartoonist: Everyone Wants to Kill Me and You May Too!” on September 28th. Daryl is also scheduled to speak visit the poli-sci department and meet with the school’s editorial cartoonist.
Mentioned over on Tom Spurgeon’s Comicsreporter.com – Mike Luckovich will be on hand on September 25th at the Decatur Library to discuss and sign his book “Four More Wars!”. Mike’s appearance is scheduled for 7:15 pm. See the library’s web site for more information.
I found an article in the Free Lance-Star that talks about how topical Herblock cartoons are decades after he drew them. The story is accompanies by several images of this cartoons – dealing with wire-tapping, the religious right, and the deficit.
E&P has a great story on Clay Bennett’s year as president of the AAEC (whose term ends this tomorrow). Some of the things I know he had to deal with was the number of cartoonists that lost their jobs or took buyouts: Michael Ramirez, Kevin ‘Kal’ Kallaugher, Stacy Curtis, Tim Menees, David Simpson, and Larry Wright each walked out the door of their respective newspapers – only Michael has regained a staff cartoonist position.
Glenn McCoy will be a featured speaker at the Missouri Press Association’s annual convention this September 15th. He’ll talk about the art of editorial cartooning. Glenn produced editorial cartoons that are syndicated through Universal Press as well as the creator of The Duplex and co-creator of The Flying McCoys which he produces with his brother Gary.

E&P has a pretty good behind the scenes story that was first reported by R.C. Harvey. Is it goes, Mike Luckovich’s Reuben trophy did not arrive in Chicago in time for the award ceremony and so NCS organizers dropped back to plan ‘B’ – borrow a trophy from a previous award winner.
The Akron Beacon Journal has announced that it will cut 25% of its staff – approximately 40 people to “align costs with revenues.” Chip Bok, their editorial cartoonist, says he’s not one of them, but two other artists will be losing their jobs. One such artist is Rick Steinhauser who has expressed interest in inking cartoons. If you’re aware of any opportunities contact Chip through his blog.
For the last 13 years, Jefferson City News Tribune editorial cartoonist Jim Dyke has spent his vacation hours doing caricatures at the Missouri State Fair – for the change in pace and to meet and greet news people.
Ted Rall is celebrating 10 years of syndication with Universal Press where he draws cartoons for over 140 newspapers and also produces a weekly column.
From the Great Lakes Chapter of the NCS comes news that Jeff Stahler (Moderately Confused and editorial cartoonist for The Columbus Dispatch) will be featured in an upcoming exhibit in West Virginia during the month of September. The exhibit also includes watercolor paintings by Jeff’s mother Wanda. The exhibit is called, “Moderately Confused with Mom.”
