Some New York Times Readers’ Veyesque Cartoons Revealed
Skip to commentsLast month The New York Times ran their obituary of cartoonist P.C. Vey and at the same time asked readers to submit cartoons in a PC Vey vein i.e., “humor in the absurdities of everyday life.”
With a deadline of Oct. 20 The Times has sorted the “more than 200 submissions” and presented a baker’s dozen of them in today’s paper as “Life Is Funny. These Readers Drew Cartoons That Prove It” (or here).

The gallery chosen by The Times included 11 professional cartoonists: Andy Cowan and Dan McConnell, Paul Schwartzman, Mary Lawton, Adam Van Vleet, Linda Lee(?), Ron Fresco, Tina Christiansen, Daniel Shem, Phil Witte, Bob Eckstein, and, maybe, Bei Bei Chen (children’s book author but is she illustrator?).
The two amateur cartoonists are Doug Barat and actor Stephen Wallem (see above).
Stephen Wallem excitedly wrote on Instagram:
“I just got published in the @nytimes ! A childhood dream come true. My first dream as a kid was to be a cartoonist (and eventually became the satirical cartoonist for my high school newspaper). Performing led to different dreams, so I certainly never imagined I’d be published in the New York Times one day.”
Bob Eckstein submitted a cartoon that is at least ten years old and has been shown in a number of places.
