Cartoonist and mural painter Yasser Mounbir has been sentenced to four years in jail and fined 40,000 dirhams ($4,095 US) for insulting the monarch by posting caricatures of King Mohammed VI on his Instagram account. He was sentenced Oct. 30.

The African Meridian reports that he was found guilt of two counts: insulting the King and insulting public officials. Moroccan Association for Human Rights and Cartooning for Peace have called for his immediate release.

According to several news sources, his attorney plans to appeal. They argue Mounbir’s case should have been tried under Morocco’s press and publishing law and not the penal code. There is a social media campaign to pressure the government to release Mounbir.
