A few weeks ago, I brought you news that while Mike Luckovich was away on vacation, his paper – the Atlanta Journal-Constitution – held a contest called “Think you can do better?” in which they invited their readers to send an editorial cartoon.  The results have been posted (registration required) with the winner going to William Warren won with 541 votes (out of 3,158 cast online). Warren just happens to be this year’s John Locher award winnner from Forest Lake University.

Aaron Taylor, editorial cartoonist for the Daily Herald in Provo Utah, is one of four cartoonist to join Cagle Cartoon Syndicate according to E&P.  The other three are Michael Kountouris of Athens, Greece,  Malcolm Evans of New Zealand, and Effat Muhammad of Egypt.  Aaron was the 1997 winner of the John Lochcer Award for best college editorial cartoonist.

Dave Astor of Editor and Publisher has written an excellent article (featured on the AAEC web site) on the changing work duties of some editorial cartoonists who have added animation and blogging to their work load.  The story features Walt Handelsman of Newsday, Mike Shelton of Orange County Register, Matt Davies of The Journal News, and Clay Jones of The Free Lance-Star.
Regarding the affect of animating cartoonis:

Fans of Jules Fieffer will want to read this article from the Vineyard Gazette.  The article covers much of Jule’s many accomplishments and that he retreats to Martha’s Vineyard to do writing, while New York City is where he does artwork.  He is currently working on another children’s book, which would be his 10th.

John Rose writes in to announce that a collection of his editorial cartoons has been published by Parkway Publishers and is entitled, This Is Where I Draw the Line! John is the editorial cartoonist for the Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg, VA and also draws Barney Google and  Snuffy Smith.

From Editorialcartoonists.com comes news that Stephan Templeton has won first place in editorial cartooning in  the 2006 Excellence in Journalism Award from the Philadelphia Society of Professional Journalists.  Templeton draws for the Intelligencer.

Additionally, SW Parra has taken first place in editorial cartooning from the 2005 Better Newspapers Contents by the California Newspaper Publishers Association.

Detroit News editorial cartoonist, Henry Payne has collaborated with a local first-time author Joe O’Connor to create a book called “Where Did Daddy’s Hair Go? The book, published by Random House Children’s Books is about an inquisitive boy and his bald father.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial cartoonist Mike Luckhovich is taking a vacation and the editorial board is running a contest called “Think you can do better?” wherein they invite readers to submit their own editorial cartoon for a chance to appear on the editorial page.

The venerable Herbert Block, best known as Herblock will have his own exhibit with the Library of Congress. The exhibit that opens today is small but only a preview of a much larger exhibit that will open up in 2009 to commemorate his 100th birthday. 

Disney Theatrical Productions has announced that they will be making a musical based on Jules Feiffer’s book The Man in the Ceiling.  The music and lyrics will be done by Andrew Lippa.
