Near exhaustive list of international cartooning contests created

For the last three years I took an active part in various cartoon competitions around the globe (just a month ago I was awarded by the Award of Excellence at the National Press Club of Canada International Cartoon Contest.)  As a byproduct of all these activities I have got tons of info about cartoon competitions, awards, professional cartoonists etc. So the idea to create a free, available for everybody informational service came naturally.The site map is very simple, I practically do not provide graphic, concentrated on the content.

Now Photoshop lets us appleC-appleV elements and move them around, making complicated cartoons like this one do-able under tight deadlines.That said, I always feel an irrational twinge of guilt when I cut-and-paste within a cartoon, as if readers have paid me by the line and insist on their money’s worth.  For reasons I can’t explain, I usually go back in and tweak the characters and backgrounds here and there to give the eagle-eyed wannabes something to examine and form conspiracy theories about.

Berkeley Breathed examines the future of comics in newspapers

There is a great article over at the LA Times about an upcoming “Sunday at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books” symposium that will examine the future of comics in the newspaper…. Other cartoonists on the panel include Cathy Guisewite (“Cathy”), Jerry Scott (“Baby Blues” and “Zits”) and Lalo Alcaraz (“La Cucaracha”).Berkeley:”I don’t think you’ll ever see another ‘Calvin & Hobbes,’ ‘Bloom County’ or ‘Doonesbury’ again,” says Breathed, 48, who received the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1987.

NCS Cartoon Chapter Launches Web Site

Mike Lynch and Editor and Publisher have announced the new web site for the “Berndt Toast Gang” also known as the Long Island, NY chapter of the National Cartoonist Society.According to E&P other members of the chapter include:”Smitty” comic creator Walter Berndt (1899-1979) — include “The Lockhorns” cartoonists Bunny Hoest and John Reiner of King Features Syndicate, “They’ll Do It Every Time” cartoonist Al Scaduto of King, Bill Gallo of the New York Daily News, “Mad” magazine artist Mort Drucker, and many others.
