It is the elephant, not the president, who hesitates to dive into an empty pool. They’ve followed him faithfully since his first inauguration, but Republicans have been scrubbing their websites of mentions of Dear Leader and several of them found places they needed to be instead of the half-empty halls of Trumpapalooza. They’re not eager […]
The big news of the day is that Senators Tillis and Cornyn have resolved their doubts about confirming Todd Blanche as attorney general, since he has fulfilled two conditions: One, to sit down and talk with a group of Epstein victims, and the other, to certify an end to the proposed slush fund for paying […]
Well, perhaps. It’s clearly a good thing that we defeated the Nazis and thwarted Japan’s imperialism, and the famous raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi is an iconic image of how America rallied in that time of crisis. However, we shouldn’t forget that, while we rallied on the battlefield, we had also rallied on the home […]
A new irregular feature: Etc., where I feature political cartoons that don’t fit into a major topic but that I found interesting or amusing. The risk is that I won’t have much to say beyond “Wow,” and posting cartoons without commentary does not qualify as “fair use.” Not that I’d be alone in doing that, […]
Nice timing on today’s Doonesbury, which was done some time ago but appears just as Dear Leader demonstrates his peacekeeping skills as well as his need for praise.Among editorial cartoonists, it was interesting to see who leapt into the fray and who did not. I recognize that some cartoonists may not be allowed to break […]
I don’t know how many times I’ve alluded to this, but if you’re never seen Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, it’s time you did, because the question of “truth and illusion” is currently far more relevant than it was 60 years ago. The drama is a cross between Theatre of the Absurd plays like Endgame […]
The expression “2 a.m. in the sophomore dorm” goes back at least to Usenet days. It refers to overly idealistic ideas and nonsensical proposals that arise in the wee hours of the morning among people who have not yet learned how the world works and who base their judgment on how the world should be […]
If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer. … And a people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think […]
I hope Ratt is right. He seems to be right about who is to blame and why. These aren’t the only suspects, but they’re the main figures in the process, which is less a conspiracy than a flow that includes past politicians like Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist, and entertainment figures who have created a rich […]
Sorensen reframes matters in current, rather than traditional, terms, and it’s hard to disagree with her suggestion that we stop pretending things are the same as they’ve always been. It seems time to, as Howard Cosell put it, “Tell it like it is.”It’s hard to avoid knowing that things have changed, and if for some […]
I’ve been having a debate with myself over when you say a person is misinformed and when you call them a deliberate liar. It’s a debate the entire nation has been sucked into. The third possible category is “raving looney,” however, and if you’d like a fairly detailed justification for that one, I strongly recommend […]
There are any number of cartoons, memes and videos floating around about what a disappointment Dear Leader’s parade turned out to be, and that’s probably a good thing in terms of keeping up morale among the dissenters, though I doubt much of it will get through the president’s protective bubble. The thing is, LBJ and Nixon […]
Weyant kicks off today’s commentary with a salute to the obvious: Donald Trump is for sale. There are cynics who say he ran for a second term to avoid being tried, convicted and jailed for things he did in his first term, but that’s not true. Most of the charges he was trying to avoid […]
From The Buffalo News (or here): Adam Zyglis, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for The Buffalo News, has received another high honor. Zyglis captured first place in the Editorial Cartoons category in the 91st National Headliner Award competition, which honors the best print, broadcast and online journalism in the United States in 2024. From the National […]
Gary Varvel (Creators) reports that paratroopers are landing in North Carolina, apparently in search of undocumented migrants. As you may know, Columbia University is basically a concrete campus in the middle of Manhattan, so, obviously, this is some other Columbia. Now, somebody is going to point out that there are many places named “Columbia,” but you […]
