CSotD: The Beautiful Game comes to a climax

by Mike Peterson 0 comments July 11, 2010

Madam & Eve celebrates, and mourns, today’s World Cup finals. I’ve been disappointed that ESPN and ABC, together with the American networks not covering the games themselves, have failed to provide the kind of travelogue coverage they normally extend to the host countries of the Olympics. We’ve seen a lot of games, but only vague […]

CSotD: Saturday profile: Michael Jantze of “The Norm”

by Mike Peterson 0 comments July 9, 2010

(This profile of Michael Jantze, creator of “The Norm,” is part of a series I did in 2003 for the Post-Star of Glens Falls, NY. The Norm has since gone out of syndication but is available on-line in reruns.)It’s kind of like “Annie Hall.” It’s like illustrated stand-up comedy. Sometimes, it feels like jazz. It’s […]

Dork Tower to return after two-year hiatus

by Alan Gardner 2 comments July 9, 2010

From ICV2 comes word that John Kovalic is bringing back Dork Tower with perhaps a print run either as a stand-alone comic or part of the 10th Dork Tower collection that is scheduled to be out in the Spring of 2011. Going forward Kovalic plans to release a 4 or 5-issue mini-series annually for both […]

Go read: Spurgeon interview with Richard Thompson

by Alan Gardner 1 comments July 9, 2010

Comics Reporter Tom Spurgeon has posted a transcript of the panel he moderated at Heroes Con last June with Cul de Sac creator Richard Thompson. Definitely a must read if you’re a fan of Richard’s work – and should read anyway if you’re not. SPURGEON: How do you like to read strips? Are you a […]

Graphic novel of life of Anne Frank available today

by Alan Gardner 2 comments July 9, 2010

If you’re in the Netherlands (and I do have a couple of readers there according to my web analytics) you might be interested to know that the Anne Frank Foundation has announced a graphic novel based on Anne Frank’s life is now available. The idea for a comic book originated from the fact that children […]

by Alan Gardner 0 comments July 9, 2010

The Somali man who is accused of attempting to kill Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard back on New Year’s Day has been officially charged with terrorism. The man’s name has not been released. He allegedly broke into Kurt’s home armed with a knife and axe.

CSotD: I’d find it just as compelling

by Mike Peterson 0 comments July 9, 2010

It’s hard for print comics to match the timeliness of web features like The New Adventures of Queen Victoria, and it’s hard to anyone to match Pab Sungenis’s gift for snarky insight.I have been following the inescapable story of LeBron James and the Decision That Would Rock the World, and thinking that there are a […]

The Jeff Kinney and Lincoln Peirce connection

by Alan Gardner 1 comments July 8, 2010

Michael Cavna writes about the history between Diary of a Whimpy Kid creator Jeff Kinney and Big Nate creator Lincoln Peirce. It was the early ’90s, and Kinney was an aspiring cartoonist at the University of Maryland, as well as a big fan of the comic strip “Big Nate,” which he read in The Post. […]

Webcomics auction for the gulf coast has begun

by Alan Gardner 0 comments July 8, 2010

Back in June I reported that several webcomic creators were planning on auctioning off original art to raise money for Gulf of Mexico clean up and restoration efforts. The auction for those originals is now underway. As of this posting, the most sought after original is from Kate Beaton’s Hark! a Vagrant. Auction ends July […]

CSotD: To Boldly Go Where No Kid Has Gone Before

by Mike Peterson 4 comments July 8, 2010

There are several strips doing “odd summer camp” arcs this week, but Cul de Sac is featuring something that not only could exist but does, if not quite in this format.  And, as always, Richard Thompson elevates things with a bit of social satire beyond the obvious, and a reaction shot to remind us that, […]

San Diego Comic-con sans San Diego?

by Alan Gardner 28 comments July 7, 2010

Heidi MacDonald has a great write-up regarding the potential loss to San Diego if Comic-Con International moves the largest comic-con in the US because it’s outgrown the convention center and hotel availability. Other cities vying for the convention include Los Angeles and Anaheim. With its contract with the San Diego Convention Center running out in […]

Tyler Perry unhappy with Boondocks parody

by Alan Gardner 7 comments July 7, 2010

The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder has created another tempest in a teapot after the June 20th episode ran making fun of Tyler Perry. A reportedly infuriated Perry retaliated behind the scenes. Rumors began circulating days after the installment aired June 20 that an enraged Perry fired members of his staff due to possible leaks. Last […]

CSotD: Maybe if you add a “T” to the 3rd Symphony …

by Mike Peterson 2 comments July 7, 2010

The idea of an intellectual roofer is well within the framework of Frazz, which is, after all, about an intellectual janitor, though I think pounding nails* to Beethoven seems a bit unlikely. Gilbert & Sullivan, more likely, but only complete recordings with all the dialogue, not those cheesy “highlight” recordings.Given the current weather on the […]
