As posted on the AAEC web site, Tim Menees, who was let go from his 30 years at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette job as editorial cartoonist, was awarded first place in the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s Golden Quill Journalism awards.
The PMC is a great non-profit organization that goes into third world countries and fights overpopulation problems along with sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS and the oppression of women, by educating the local populations and encouraging them to stop their risky behavior through soap operas on the local media. PMC’s innovative approach has been very successful as the third world audiences remember and respond well to the educational dramas they hear on their local radio.The PMC also works to raise the consciousness of population relation issues in the first world, and one of their initiatives was a cartoon contest.

Signe Wilkinson, editorial cartoonist for the Philadelphia Daily News, was one of the most vocal American cartoonist earlier this year during the Danish/Mohammad cartoon riots. The debate is still raging and Signe is still the go to person for comments and reaction.Over at Islam Online there is a Point/Counter-Point wherein Signe takes on Felicity Arbuthnot a British journalist and activist on the topic of whether there should be limits on freedom of expression when it comes to the sacred in religions.

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists has posted the schedule and agenda of their annual conference that will be held this June 7-10 in Denver. The Danish cartoon will dominate two sessions and will also include two national figures: U.S. Sen. Kirk Anderson has been added to the Universal Press line up of editorial cartoonists according to Editor and Publisher…. Paul Pioneer Press from 1995 to 2003 before being laid off.
Before Ann Telnaes became the 2001 Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartooning, she was an animator for Disney. One of her animated shorts that she created while a student at California Institute of the Arts will be part of an exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City according to Editor and Publisher.The exhibit, entitled “Tomorrowland: CalArts in Moving Pictures” runs May 25-Aug.
This Sunday, Jules Feiffer, the Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist from the Village Voice, will be at the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York City to sign his book “A Room with a Zoo.” The book signing runs from 1:30 to 2:30.
This year’s Associated Press Society of Ohio award for editorial cartooning goes to Jim Borgman who is celebrating 30 years with the Cincinnati Enquirer. Second and third place go to Jeff Darcy of the Plain Dealer (Cleveland) and Chip Bok of the Akron Beacon Journal.Jerry King, who contributes editorial cartoons to The Independent, also took first place in editorial cartooning, presumably in a different circulation size category.
The AAEC website provides more details – one important one being that Larry will not actually be leaving the paper permanently. He’ll still be providing editorial cartoons 3 times a week and continue to work on the paper’s web site which he has done since the mid-nineties.
