Captain Marvel is in the movie theaters and Shazam is rolling out next month, so let’s take a look at a proposed Captain Marvel superhero comic strip that never made it into newspapers.75 years ago the most popular comic book superhero was not Superman, it was the original Captain Marvel (now referred to as Shazam). […]

Everybody is jumping on the Manafort sentencing, and I like Stuart Carlson‘s take in large part because he doesn’t specify the offense that the defendant was convicted of.We can assume, racists and classists that we are, that the fellow didn’t evade millions of dollars in taxes, but, unlike some cartoonists that compare a sentence for […]
The National Women’s Hall of Fame announced their 2019 inductees. Cartoonist Rose O’Neill of Kewpies fame was among the chosen. From the Hall’s O’Neill profile: Rose O’Neill: (1874-1944) As a successful artist, writer, businesswoman, and philanthropist, Rose boldly assisted with the activities of the woman suffrage movements coordinated by the National Woman’s Suffrage Association headquartered in New […]
Seems as good a time as any to drop these recent comic strip articles. Where I’m Coming From by Barbara Brandon-CroftWhere I’m Coming From’s mission as a comic meant to affect change rather than just entertain was twofold. First, Brandon-Croft wanted white readers to fully grasp the struggles of Black Americans as people in their own […]
I was going to post this Mr. Boffo cartoon starring Paul Manafort, but we don’t do politics on Friday. (FWIW, the joke is that he’s completely clear on the concept.)Instead, here are some strips highlighting a week in which a whole lot of cartoonists happened to come up with gags to which I responded personally. For […]
James Allen, in today’s Mark Trail, turned the table on Stephan Pastis. Stephan has been known to mock other comic strip characters in his Pearls Before Swine.James Allen (via Facebook) related a tale of one such incident that led to today’s strip:Last year, in Philly, I sat in on Jeff Keane’s presentation and he showed a […]
It seems letter writing campaigns are effective. The Los Angeles Times announced today that Wiley Miller’s Non Sequitur comic strip will be returning.TO OUR READERS: A month ago, The Times halted publication of the “Non Sequitur” cartoon by Wiley Miller after an illustration in the strip on a Sunday contained a vulgar message. Miller and […]
Today, I’ll be looking back at things which have resurfaced, but, first, thisJuxtaposition of the Day(Ann Telnaes) (Mike Marland)We try to keep this stuff in the family, but somehow it got out that, during a hearing in the New Hampshire legislature on a bill to allow seizure of guns from people identified as at high risk […]

Mike Thompson addresses the Michael Jackson “revelations,” which I put in quotation marks because, come on.You don’t have to be Archie Bunker to have had serious doubts about Jackson’s innocence, which gives me a problem with the cartoon: It’s hard to picture this fellow as a one-time fan, though I realize the 14-year-olds who bought […]
After getting some cartooning experience in college Kevin Fagan got a syndicate contract. That was 40 years ago. And Kevin subtly celebrated in today’s Drabble. In case you don’t remember, here is Norman and Wendy from March 5, 1979:Norm and Wendy have aged well, but then so has Kevin. The Orange County Register helps celebrate the occasion and […]
The firehose of Trumpian foolishness often results in a whole lot of versions of the same gag.But his bizarre, unhinged two-hour ramble in front of the Conservative Political Action Committee gathering yielded, besides Eugene Robinson’s horrified response, (and this one, and this one, and others) this weird photo and, from that, a boatload of cartoons […]
Jerry Van Amerongen has informed fans that he is retiring and his Ballard Street panel will end March 30, 2019.DEAR FRIENDS: We interrupt my normal posting for this announcement. After nearly 40 yrs. of syndicated cartooning, and a deadline each day of those 40 yrs., I’m announcing my retirement from syndicated newspaper cartooning. For me […]
Agnes welcomes me home from a four-day road trip with a reminder of why I do this: It’s for the fabulous wealth you can generate simply by being massively discontent. The trip out to Denver for a training session with my young reporters felt like I was visiting some beleaguered revolutionary holdouts. The day before the […]
