The uniquely American art form of the comic strip is gaining popularity in Africa. The Africa News website has posted a sampling of some of the cartoons now showing in an exhibit in the Netherlands.

An exhibit entitled “Emancipation and Denigration: Thomas Nast Pictures Black America” is now open in Auburn N.Y. according to E&P. A french editor has been fired for running a cartoon on the front page depicting Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy figures sitting on a cloud with the caption reading “Don’t worry Mohammad, we’ve all been caricatures here”. The editor, Jacques Lefranc, was dismissed by the paper’s owner as “a sign of respect.”
