Dear AAEC membersI didn’t get a chance to respond to one of Dave Astor’s stories about the blogging session at this month’s AAEC convention. The discussion apparently didn’t go well and was received luke warmly. The most egregious comment, in my opinion, came from David Horsey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, who Astor reported as saying, […]
According to E&P editorial cartoonist Ted Rall and conservative Michelle Malkin got into a bit of a tiff on their blogs as Malkin called a recent Ted cartoon a “troop-bashing tantrum.” See the cartoon here.In her blog post she writes: Unhinged cartoonist Ted Rall is throwing another troop-bashing tantrum. Normally, I would not feed this […]
Walt Handelsman, editorial cartoonist for Newsday, will be co-chair of this year’s “Cartoons & Cocktails” – a fund-raising event of the National Press Club to support “Young D.C.” (a teen newspaper), the Cartoonists Rights Network International, and the National Press Club scholarship program.
Ed Hall, editorial cartoonist for The Baker County Press, has joined the blogosphere. His blog opened up on July 10, which makes me wonder if Ed’s decision to start a blog was influenced by the AAEC convention’s discussion on blogging. Looks like he’s updating it daily with cartoons, roughs, and photos.
J.P. Trostle writes in with a link to his photos from the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists conference earlier this month:Finally got a chance to sort thru all my photos from last week’s 50th Anniversary of the AAEC — took 911 shots (!) with a new 2 gig chip while in DC. Several Daily Cartoonists have emailed me with some devastating news that Doug Marlette died this morning in a Mississippi car accident. From the police reports, Doug’s pickup hydroplaned off of the highway and struck a tree at about 9:42 a.m. this morning. He died instantly. Another passenger (the driver) was taken to the hospital.Doug, 57, […]

From the National Journal comes a report on the AAEC convention this year. The story centers on the dwindling number of staff positions (a reoccurring theme), perspectives on animated editorial cartoons, and the demographics of the association. The AAEC will celebrate 50 years of existence at its annual meeting at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington […]
