90 years ago on January 17, 1929…E. C. Segar introduced Popeye into his comic strip. Popeye was only intended to be in this one episode of Thimble Theatre and disappear, but by the end of the adventure Popeye had become too popular to ignore. After a brief absence Popeye returned and stayed.Segar was a genius […]

I’ll let today’s Candorville set the tone, because it’s the most self-critical of today’s batch of cartoons, plus I’m always pleased whenever Clyde becomes the voice of reason. It did seem, at first, that Jazmine Barnes had been the victim of a random, race-based drive-by shooting and there was a lot of outrage over the concept. […]
Tom Batiuk spent a few days of his Funky Winkerbean last week dishing on young’uns unknowledge of zipatone and Dr. Martin’s and other old school cartooning equipment. Magazine and Marmaduke cartoonist Brad Anderson‘s papers have been donated to the Billy Ireland. Some (well, at least one) major bookstores break protocol by putting out new releases early, seemingly […]
Poor Lee Judge. Not only do the scandals come faster than you can draw them, but even trivial gags get one-upped by a President who is far more of a chintzy, childish cheapskate than anyone could imagine. But, yeah, the National Champion Clemson Tigers are lucky he didn’t just set out an array of binkies and bottles. The […]
Heidi MacDonald reports that Olivia Jaimes was voted The (Comics) Beat Newcomer of the Year. The voting for Comics Industry Person of the Year was a foregone conclusion. As Heidi explains:The overwhelming choice was the one and only Stan Lee. Although Stan’s passing on November 12th 2018 was fresh on everyone’s mind, his historical stature ensured […]
We’re dealing with sub-zero weather moreso than snow, though we got a load of that the other day. Enough to make me laff at this Zits, because I’ve had a VW van and, when your source of heat is the gentle breeze blowing over the engine eight feet behind you, the distinction between wipers that […]
The big news is the premiere of the Little Oop Sunday comic strip by Joey Alison Sayers and Jonathan Lemon. This raises two questions in my mind: First – does this strip require a new entry in any comic strip listings or does it just get a note in the Alley Oop entry? Second – will […]
Perhaps the view from a distance is clearer. British cartoonist Brian Adcock manages to freshen the familiar panhandler concept by propping her up against the wall — excuse me, the barrier or, shall we say, steel slats — with her MAGA hat as the receptacle for the charity she needs. Though part of the Trump Party […]
Like Baldo Smudge, Stanley Ford is a fictitious comic strip cartoonist.Stanley Ford is the main character in the 1965 movie How to Murder your Wife, starring Jack Lemmon as the cartoonist. Stanley Ford is the highly successful creator of an action/adventure comic strip featuring secret agent Bash Brannigan. That all changes when Stanley, and inevitably, Bash […]
Jimmy Margulies produces the most concise picture of what we’re facing: Trump’s wall has very little to do with border security and everything to do with his ego.If the topic were border security, he could have come to an agreement with Congress months, perhaps years ago: Both parties take the matter seriously, though only one […]
One benefit of the “Friday Funnies” is that not only can I use comics from the past week that didn’t fit on the day they ran, but sometimes they roll around in my head and gain additional meaning. In this case, Pajama Diaries provided a nice rundown on the chaos of modern pictures, but it was […]
Lincoln Peirce is in the news with his new book Max and the MidKnights. Publishers Weekly interviews Lincoln about the book and his Big Nate comic strip. One topic brought up is what to call this not-prose, not graphic novel type of literature: Despite your new book’s departure in setting and genre, the pages echo the […]
Good Timing AwardI got a major Update message the other day from Lenovo, so I don’t know if it was their upgrade or Microsoft’s, but after it was installed, my laptop began freezing up.The next day, I saw an “Update and Shut Down” prompt as I logged off, which made me think they’d found and […]
