The Portsmouth Herald has posted the results of their comic survey with 502 respondents. The article did provide the score for all of their features, but this is what I’ve put together based on what numbers were given (ordered by positive number of votes). The score after the feature title is positive/negative votes.
Over on Daryl Cagle’s blog, he’s posted a very stirring reminder of a current bill making its way through the House that makes it easier for companies to reprint an artists work without proper compensation if the artist can not be identified. As Daryl explains it:
The venerable Herbert Block, best known as Herblock will have his own exhibit with the Library of Congress. The exhibit that opens today is small but only a preview of a much larger exhibit that will open up in 2009 to commemorate his 100th birthday.
Steve Moore, creator of In the Bleachers is an executive producer and co-creator of the upcoming movie Open Season that hits the theaters on September 29th. While Steve is no stranger to animation (he’s created animation shorts for ESPN and a children’s television series), this is his first feature film.
Disney Theatrical Productions has announced that they will be making a musical based on Jules Feiffer’s book The Man in the Ceiling. The music and lyrics will be done by Andrew Lippa.
Over on Mike Lynch’s blog, he’s posted several photos and the background story on Bill and Bunny Hoest’s creations, The Lockhorns and Howard Huge. Last month, I was fortunate enough to snap a few photos of the studio where The Lockhorns (as well as a Howard Huge) is produced.Did you know The Lockhorns was originally titled The Lockhorns of Levittown?
How many cartoonists can draw the final cartoon without first penciling a draft? Is it something only editorial cartoonist are known to do?
According to this report on Red Orbit, new episodes of Aaron McGruder’s Boondocks television show are being delayed until March 2007. The Cartoon Network has asked for five more episodes.
Guy Gilchrist’s Cartoonist’s Academy will be hosting a fund-raiser for Operation First Response which helps families of soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to E&P, the event is scheduled for July 25th in Simsbury, CT and will include other cartoonists such as Frank McLaughlin and Mike Lynch. Guy is the co-creator of Nancy.`
This two panel cartoon begins with the turtle character stepping on something in tall grass and ends with a question, “What makes a bite thats shaped like a crescent moon?”… I remember at the time defending Johnny on ToonTalk as the crescent is a common symbol/cliché used on outhouses and that people were inserting their own views into the strip, but now with this strip, I’m thinking that perhaps Johnny is capable of these clever puns (verbal or visual).
E&P reports that this Friday Pajama Diaries cartoonist Terri Libenson is scheduled to take part in the Washington Post’s live chat this Friday at 1 p.m. eastern time.
The National Museum of Health and Medicine recently opened “Cartoonists Take Up Smoking,” an exhibit showing over 55 original editorial cartoons on the topic of smoking. The exhibit is part of a traveling show that was first unveiled in Kentucky but has also been on display in Seattle, Tscaloosa, and Birmingham.
The Detroit Free had a blurb Sunday that I missed, but it goes something like this – Cathy Guisewite’s Cathy is on vacation until August 6 and the Free Press will run Pajama Diaries as a temporary replacement. Mark Tatulli’s Lio has gained a permanent place in the Freep taking the place of A Doctor, a Lawyer & a Cop.
In a unusual offer, Ted Rall has announced on his blog that he will be auctioning off all the original artwork (99 full comic pages) of his upcoming book “Silk Road to Ruin: Is Central Asia the New Middle East.”The auction runs now through July 22 and has a minimum bid of $4,500 (or $10,000 if the auction runs after July 22.
