This Day (and Some Other Days) in Comic Strip Land

With ComicStripLand citizens John Rose, Lincoln Peirce, Ray Billingsley, Jef Mallett, Will Henry, Harry Bliss, Andy Marlette, Georgia Dunn, and Bill Watterson.

John Rose Celebrates 25 Years Drawing Barney Google and Snuffy Smith

Barney Google and Snuffy Smith by John Rose

We start by toasting John Rose who is celebrating a quarter of a century of being in charge of Barney Google and Snuffy Smith. That surpasses the 24 years creator Billy De Beck put in on the comic strip (1919-1943), but still falls short of cartoonist Fred Lasswell‘s 58 years (1943-2001).

Comics Kingdom acknowledged John’s tenure with a first and latest showing.

A Study in Teachers

Two teachers, two takes. Curtis shows appreciation for Mrs. Nelson, Big Nate shows annoyance with Mrs. Godfrey. While over at Frazz we have Mrs. In-Between. I think the jury is still out on seldom seen Mrs. MacIntosh at the Wallace the Brave school.

Timing

Death cap mushrooms

Headline: Deadly mushroom outbreak in California reaches historic levels.

Yeah, here in California our local news stations warn us daily about free range mushrooms.

Today’s Bliss is one of those unfortunate comic timing things that happen.

Letters to the Editor

A while back we noted that The Gloucester Daily Times had drop their daily comics strips from the print edition. Yeah, they got letters.

From a senior (or here):

To the editor:

Very disappointed in your decision to drop the comics from the paper.

Your assumption that everyone has access to a computer and is capable of finding their way around the comics website is presumptive.

As a senior I find reading the paper two days a week online inconvenient and annoying.

Maybe print on paper is old fashioned but it’s real and reassuring…

At the time we weren’t sure if it was that one newspaper or others of the North of Boston Media Group also dropped their comics page. Well at least one other did. The Newburyport News is also receiving letters (or here).

I was so disappointed to see the comics have been eliminated from the print edition of the paper.

As a longtime subscriber, they are the first thing I read, to lift my spirits for the day. I enjoy a print version of the paper and rarely go online to read it. Yes, I am old and I will miss them.

And from someone who doesn’t self-identify as elderly (or here):

So this morning I go to read the comics and there was one. Then I read the editorial spin that states, “We determined that a full page of comics each day is not the best use of space in the newspaper.”

As a population we are used to spin everyday of our lives, from politicians, government agencies and corporations. Why can’t you say, “as another cost cutting move we are stopping publishing the comics.”?

Online is not the same. You have to click on each comic and then click back to get the next one, tedious and unnecessary…

Good Advice

In 1973 I was at The Cow Palace when this happened.

So I have to agree with Breaking Cat News reporter Bandit’s advice.

Comics Kingdom Discord

Comics Kingdom has announced they are now at Discord:

A new home for readers, creators, and anyone who’s ever quoted a comic strip from memory.

Today we’re opening the doors to the official Comics Kingdom Discord server: a free community space for readers, fans, cartoonists, collectors, and anyone who has ever sent a comic strip to a friend because it was too good to keep to themselves.

Join the Comics Kingdom Discord

I’m one of those seniors noted above so I had to look up “What is Discord:”

Discord is a free communications app that lets you share voice, video, and text chat with friends, game communities, and developers. It has hundreds of millions of users, making it one of the most popular ways to connect with people online. Discord can be used on almost every popular platform and device, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and via web browsers.
