The Aislin & de Adder Interview

Terry Mosher has twice won the National Newspaper Award and is a member of The Order of Canada.

Michael de Adder has twice won the National Newspaper Award and is a member of The Order of Canada.

Terry Mosher aka “Aislin” showed Pierre Trudeau tripping Brian Mulroney when the latter retired. “The Tories denounced me in the House of Commons over this cartoon. It was the happiest day of my career” said Aislin.

“Do You Mind If I Play Through” is said to have cost de Adder his freelance contract with Brunswick News, Inc. It also brought him worldwide fame.

Terry Mosher is the longest working editoonist, beginning in 1967; Michael de Adder was born in 1967.

They both sat down with Global News’ Ben Mulroney (son of that Brian mentioned above) for 15 minutes to discuss the trials and tribulations and objectives (not always to be funny) of creating political cartoons.

  1. “This is the 21st century. You can’t raise any controversial subjects in public, anymore. It’s not your world, anymore. Too many people don’t share your values. Just be quiet and work the program.” Cardiac rehab specialist
Apparently, freedom of speech in public venues isn’t a thing, at present.

    1. *eyeroll* when I was in healthcare training back in ye olden times it was hammered into us that you keep politics and religion out of your interactions with patients. Maybe some people find talking about issues some kind of bonding ritual, but personally if I’m in cardiac rehab, I’m there for cardiac rehab, not to hear my rehab person’s latest thoughts about MeToo or whatever.

It’s one thing for political cartoonists (and, interestingly enough, neither of the guys in the interview really jumped on the “you can’t say anything these days” bandwagon), but other jobs? Heck, at a dinner party with people you don’t know? Avoiding “controversial topics” is just being polite.
