For Standford Magazine Kali Shiloh talks to Amy Kurzweil and Kendra Allenby on “The Gag Economy.”
Kurzweil and Allenby are comparatively new cartoonists on the 101 year roster of New Yorker contributors, having “only” been published by the magazine since 2016.
Stanford grads, they met and bonded in The New Yorker offices on pitch day where they empathized and consoled each other on the seemingly eternal refusals by editor Bob Mankoff to accept their “idea drawings.” Though the and pitch day gathering is no longer an event since covid they have remained friends.

Today, each New Yorker cartoon earns its artist $750, and regulars like Allenby and Kurzweil are unlikely to be published more than once a month. The magazine no longer offers new cartoon contracts.

Today, the New Yorker receives up to 1,500 submissions per week from its 200 regular contributors, plus hundreds more in a “slush” pile from unknown artists [with] an acceptance rate of around 1 percent.
