Newspaper Deathwatch: The Blade

Following failed union negotiations that would have allowed the newspaper to outsource content to “AI, freelancers, managers” Block Communications will take the same path it did with The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: shut it down if a Good Samaritan cannot be found to purchase The (Toledo) Blade.

Ground News supplies bullet points and links to news story sources. The Associated Press among them:

The owners of The Blade are looking to sell the Toledo newspaper and said Tuesday that if they’re unsuccessful, both the print and digital versions of the paper will stop publishing at the end of the year.

Unless a buyer steps up The Blade will cease with the December 31, 2026 edition.

The Blade also carries a short version of the story (or here).

Block Communications has announced its intention to explore a sale of The Blade’s assets, which, if unsuccessful, will result in the final edition of the newspaper being published Dec. 31.

The Daily Cartoonist doesn’t find a recent sample of the papers comics page, but the opinion page of the newspaper regularly features the cartoons of freelancers Kirk Walters and Tim Hartman.
