Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: The merry month of mud

CUL
Cul de Sac is on my short list of strips to avoid using every day, to the point where I probably don't use it some times when it deserves to be here for fear that I'll start using it way too often, and also for fear that the next day's offering will be even more apt. That's what you get for doing it right, Richard.

It could not be any more apt than it is today, however, because yesterday came notice that the Dog Park is closed due to excess melting and moisture, and likely to remain closed until the end of mud season. Alice is stranded on her manhole cover, and I am stranded with a five-month-old puppy whose main energy outlet has been twice-daily trips to the Dog Park and who becomes unbearably inventive when cut to only one a day.

I don't know whether Alice or Vaska is more pathetic, except that our mud season ends around May 1 and I suspect mud season in DC ends in about 10 days.

I'm also not sure who has a longer attention span, Alice Otterloop or a five-month-old puppy, but I'm not offering to exchange places with Mr. and Mrs. Otterloop for the duration.

I do remember being not a whole lot older than Alice during one mud season when, having seen too many quicksand scenes on "Lassie" and other documentaries about the dangers of being sucked under, I managed a hair-breath escape, only to have my mother send me back to the scene of peril.

Many years later, the memory of that day caused me to fall out of my chair at this installment of the late Jerry Bittle's "Shirley and Son." I don't think either of our mothers realized the danger we had faced.

(And Richard Thompson's "camerawork" in today's four-panel gem is why he should, indeed, win this year's Reuben Award for "Cartoonist of the Year.")

Mike Peterson has posted his "Comic Strip of the Day" column every day since 2010. His opinions are his own, but we welcome comments either agreeing or in opposition.

  1. Oh yes! I remember a glorious day (for my children) in Montreal when they spent several hours happily sloshing around in the spring melt and came in looking so happy, and so very wet and muddy! The best of times the worst of times.
And yes. If Richard Thompson doesn’t win this year…
