Mr. Scott was born August 23, 1951 in Lufkin, Texas to the late Audrey Lee (Burns) and Van Buren Scott, Jr., and died Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at his residence.
Ron Coleman informed subscribers to The New Gag Recap of Scott’s passing and word spread from there. Van Scott had been the writer, editor and publisher of The New Gag Recap from 2011 to 2024. Scott replaced Bill Keough as publisher of the then named The Gag Recap marketing newsletter for magazine cartoonists and was succeeded by Ron Coleman.
Scott was a gag man for various cartoonists but was also a cartoonist in his own right.
And while his drawings didn’t make it to The New Yorker his gags did.
Scott created cartoons and gags that appeared in The New Yorker, Philosophy Now, Weekly Humorist, Kappan, Alta Journal, and others.
