“Cartooning was a good fit for me”

Gary Larson October 2003 on the release of The Complete Far Side

It is Gary Larson’s birthday and though it is not a particularly noteworthy age (76) it is being celebrated.

Good Wishes from The Daily Cartoonist

The Daily Cartoonist wishes Larson a Happy Birthday on Facebook and Bluesky.

Reuben Award-winning Mark Tatulli paid tribute to Reuben Award-winning Larson in today’s Liō.

Larson and The Far Side is a frequent topic of the blogiverse. Here are some recent ones.

Robert Wood at Screen Rant informed us that “This Far Side Comic Is Still the Greatest Comic Strip of All Time.” Yes, it is the one you think it is. The one starring Jerry Miller, “the nerdy little kid.”

Annie Banks at CBR notes “10 Bizarre The Far Side Comic Strips That Only Make Sense to Gary Larson.”

Back at Screen Rant Ambrose Tardive lists “Gary Larson’s 10 Best Comics, Ranked.”

Today, however, Larson’s future looks much different from what fans anticipated in the ’90s. In 2019, The Far Side website was completely redesigned, announcing a new era of The Far Side returning. It was an exciting surprise for fans to learn that Larson would be returning to the strip, revitalizing it digitally, and releasing new panels on his website for fans to read. Nowadays, Larson works on The Far Side online, creating a new era of fans who absolutely love the comic strip series.

Leading to this Collider headline: “A New ‘Far Side’ Comic Has Officially Appeared After Weeks-Long Absence.”

Since Larson (very) infrequently posts a new cartoon to The Far Side website’s New Stuff section I eagerly went there without bothering to read the article, but it was a misdirect. After 10 months Larson’s tribute to Jane Goodall remains the newest of the New Stuff.

The Collider article notes that after some weeks on pause The Far Side was once more posting old panels.

CSotD: Efficacy and Ethics

  1. I still enjoy (re-)reading The Far Side, but I have little respect for Mr. Larson’s ethics and (lacking) sense of fairness. In July 2023, his Far Works company served a “take-down” copyright complaint against Comics I Don’t Understand (cidu.info), forcing WordPress to remove a large number of “illegally” posted Far Side cartoons from CIDU pages.
CIDU has always operated under the principle of “fair use”: comics that appear there are for the purpose of discussion (just as comics appear at The Daily Cartoonist). It was especially aggravating that CIDU was used as a scapegoat: FarWorks has done nothing about the tens of thousands of Far Side cartoons posted to Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, or Xitter. It would seem that Gary Larson didn’t really care about his work appearing elsewhere, the real sin was to present and discuss The Far Side outside of Larson’s belatedly established “hallowed grounds” of his own private website.

  2. I visited the CBR site to check out the Larson pieces… although I found it distasteful to explain the jokes.
Unfortunately, their website is so corrupted with advertising that it rendered it nonfunctional for the most part.
    Never returning…

    1. You could try AdBlock Pro. The CBR website complained that ads were blocked, but it was easy to close the dialog and continue reading.

      1. Yeah. I can live on Social Security alone.

  3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU-AWOOOO!

I’m one of his tribe. Snarky nerd with a soft center.
