Editorial cartooning Obituary

Barry Rumple – RIP

Editorial cartoonist Barry Rumple has passed away.

Barry Townsend Rumple, Jr.

January 31, 1947 – December 5, 2025

From the obituary:

After high school he served in the US Army from 1965-1969 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

After the war, Barry then attended and graduated from Scranton University and Spectrum Art Institute in Belle Mead NJ. He enjoyed a long career as an Editorial Cartoonist with the Somerset Messenger Gazette and the Hunterdon County Democrat newspapers.

Barry is remembered by Mike Deak of MyCentralJersey.com (or here):

Barry was an editorial cartoonist for Somerset Press, publisher of weekly newspapers here in Central Jersey, and its shrinking mutations before finally succumbing to corporate euthanasia.

Barry was a mischievous talent whose editorial cartoons were a rarity in community weekly newspapers. The New Jersey Press Association awards we won for editorial pages were not because of my turgid editorials or self-indulgent columns, but because of Barry’s cartoons.

He knew the mantra that all decent editorialists live by, “afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted.” Barry worked remarkably quickly, especially if it was the rare editorial that was relatively well-written, cogent and strove to make a serious point.

The editorial cartoons were only part of his job. Most of his time was spent composing ads when newspapers still had ads, a frustrating task when he had to deal with ungrateful and persnickety ad reps.

  1. Barry and I met in Newark August 3 1965 at the Army recruiting station.( Our service number on our dog tags were in sequence.) We had enlisted for four years and would go to fort Dix for basic Training. Our enlistment was with the Army Security Agency and we served together next for our training at Fort Devens Massachusetts . On weekends we would go to Boston and visit my brother who was attend school there (The intelligence school existed at Fort Devens for approximately 43 years.) From Devens Barry went to Okinawa as an intercept operator . I remand at Devens for more training. I to was assigned Okinawa at Torii station as an analyst and did not tell Barry I was coming and surprised him by knocking on his door and waking him up.

We continued to write and keep in touch I would call him Aug 3 every year and re quote him his famous words after our swearing in the Army . “I think we made a mistake” btr. My attempts to join Facebook were not successful. The new teak world was not his favorite thing. Not sure he ever learned how to text.

Bary was a very kind person sensitive to the feelings of people around him. He was very proud of his nieces and nephews. Concerned when I could not make contact with him last August. I woke up at 4 AM today went to my computer googled his name And here we are. Not sure just who will see this. If any of you who are related to him do. please make contact with me. Would love to talk. Lots of stories to tell. call me ed smith 801-835-7026 or Facebook enter my email edthesmith@hotmail.com
