According to Tom Spurgeon, Keith Knight’s The K Chronicles has won a Harvey Award for Best Syndicated Strip or Panel. Keith beat out Garry Trudeau, Tony Millionaire, and Patrick McDonnell for the honor.

This year’s Cartoons and Cocktails will be hosted by Walt Handelsman, this year’s Pulitzer Prize winner. The annual event is held at the National Press Clubs and features a silent and live auction whose proceeds then go to scholarships for needy high school students pursuing journalism, a student paper and the Cartoonists Rights Network.

For Veteran’s Week (Sept. 17-26), Hector Cantu and Carlos Castellanos, creators of the Baldo feature will feature a new character named Benny Ramirez who will retell his World War II experience. Some of the stories he’ll be sharing include discrimination in the military, and his boxing skills.

Richard Thompson’s Cul-De-Sac officially launches today. According to Universal Press, it launched with an above average number of papers (70) including the Detroit Free Press, the Boston Globe, the Portland Oregonian, the Houston Chronicle and the Toronto Star. It should be up on GoComics today, but I just checked and it’s not yet available.

Mark Fiore, one of the pioneering animated editorial cartoonists, has reworked his web site. The news site also offers a “Shout back” section which includes a toll-free number for those who wish to leave a message about a cartoon.
