University of Michigan Press is publishing a book about Jakie Ormes, the first African American woman cartoonist who created Torchy Brown which ran in papers between 1937 and 1956. Allison Barrows, creator of Preteena, recently raised $1,000 for the annual “Doodle for Hunger” auction. The yearly celebrity auction helps fund the Capuchin Food Pantries in New York feed, clothe and provide counseling for the poor. This year’s event raised over $400,000. Allison’s doodle of PreTeen characters Teena, Stick and Jeri, started bidding at $350.
