Rose Anne Prevec is about to reach 100 — cartoons sold, that is. A few years ago, the Dundas artist, who had been illustrating books and drawing cartoons for family and friends, decided to take her cartooning more seriously. “At first, I posted my cartoons directly on Instagram,” she tells me. “Once those started getting […]
Giving a shout-out to Crankshaft. For shedding light on evil authoritarian figures who are trying to keep people away from the trees of knowledge. They always have been and remain an affliction on society. It does my heart good to see a kid pick up a newspaper.Young people and newspapers in Big Nate. While the […]
Yesterday was National Dog Day or some such, but I posted too early to realize it, so I’ll compensate with some canine humor today, starting with a bit of truth from The Other Coast (Creators).Indestructible dog toys are largely an issue of trial and error. I’ve seen dogs eviscerate a toy, yank out the squeaker […]
So yesterday I’m scrolling through Facebook when among the innumerable “suggested for you” posts comes a comic panel so I linger over it – the one below on the left. While it wasn’t a high resolution scan the cartoonist’s name seemed to be blurred even more than the rest of the image. It is of […]
On September 13, 2022, as part of the Lee Enterprises newspaper group, the Daily Journal of Park Hill, Missouri, on orders from headquarters, switched out their long running comics for the new standard Lee half-page: Two months ago Lee sold The Daily Journal to Better Newspapers, Inc. From Editor & Publisher: Greg Hoskins’ Better Newspapers […]
Felix the Cat was created by Pat Sullivan in 1919 and became the animated superstar of the 1920s. The public’s desire for all thing Felix led to lucrative licensing early on – in 1923 it led to a comic strip. William Randolph Hearst, hoping to cash in on the cat’s popularity, signed on to distribute […]

My situation with Arlo and Janis (AMS) isn’t so much that I needed to choose some particular strips from the current arc but, rather, how I needed to pick the right moment to sound the alert to what’s looking like a major shift. It looks, for sure, like it’s time now.I was pleased to see […]
Two popular New Yorker magazine cartoonists, who also happen to be West Tisbury neighbors and dog-walking partners, shared the stage at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs Monday for a two-handed talk about the craft they share. © Mick Stevens and Paul KarasikMick Stevens and Paul Karasik “[discussed] slides of their work, trading […]
Lemont, the protagonist of Candorville (KFS), spends too much time playing the pedant and correcting people for speaking the way people speak.Sure, he’s correct: “Pin number” is redundant, though I don’t hear people say it nearly as often as I did a decade or so ago. However, “being made redundant” remains both correct and current: It’s […]
Mr. Boffo offers a chance to visit the ungracious past. The idea of pop-up wine tastings out of paper bags reminds me of the Olden Days when the gentlemen of the streets would scrape up enough money to buy something utterly undrinkable, plus a dime for a packet of pre-sweetened Kool-Aid, which they would add to […]
Mike Peterson mentioned the sad news in passing today, but here’s a bit more. The Australian Cartoonists Association issued a statement about the Nine Entertainment newspapers dropping comic strips from their pages: The Australian Cartoonists Association notes with disappointment that the Nine newspapers (including The Age, the Sunday Age, the Sydney Morning Herald and the […]
Dilbert is dead. Well, he’s not dead dead — …— but as far as the public-at-large, and especially newspapers, are concerned, Dilbert is deader than a doornail. In place of Dilbert, numerous newspapers have decided to replace Adams with creators of color — a move that’s not only symbolically important but helping diversify a field […]
Today is a “Where do I begin?” day, but, with no particular plan in mind, let’s kick off with Bizarro (KFS), because Harold and the Purple Crayon came out when I was five years old and, while I had other books I really enjoyed, like Millions of Cats and Make Way For Ducklings, this was […]
