Editorial cartoonist Patrick O’Connor won first-place at the Los Angeles Press Club’s 48th Southern California Journalism Awards banquet Saturday night.O’Connor was honored for his cartoon titled “Undocumented Workers.”
From the Toledo Blade comes a snippet of good news for Kirk Walters, their editorial cartoonist, who was awarded “Best in Ohio” by the Press Club of Cleveland’s 28th annual Excellence in Journalism competition.
For the last three years I took an active part in various cartoon competitions around the globe (just a month ago I was awarded by the Award of Excellence at the National Press Club of Canada International Cartoon Contest.) As a byproduct of all these activities I have got tons of info about cartoon competitions, awards, professional cartoonists etc. So the idea to create a free, available for everybody informational service came naturally.The site map is very simple, I practically do not provide graphic, concentrated on the content.
From Star Pulse blog and a Universal Press press release comes news that Aaron McGruder is trying to get an Emmy for his Boondocks television show by shaming the producers through a series of advertisements…. But, f**k it, we’ll try anyway.”Apparently the ads are geared to remind those involved in the Emmys that African-Americans have not faired well in the annual ceremony.We’ll see how it goes.
Aaron Taylor, editorial cartoonist for the Daily Herald, writes in to remind me that Pat Bagley wasn’t the only Utah Headliners award winner this last weekend. Aaron was awarded 1st place for editorial cartooning in the Division B category in the recent Society of Professional Journalists awards.
Ruben Bolling was recently awarded second place for cartoons by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies last week…. According to the Universal Press press release, Ruben has been a finalist for the last six years taking top prize in 2002 and 2003.
Daryl Cagle has posted video of Dick Locher and this year’s Locher Award winner William Warren talking about the award. He has also posted the four award submission cartoons over on his site.
Salt Lake Tribune editorial cartoonist Pat Bagley was honored by the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists as the best editorial cartoonist in the state in an awards evening last Friday. Pat has also released a follow up book to his “Curious George Goes To War” called “Curious George Is Watching You” which is getting lots of press here in the conservative state of Utah.
Vietnam Veterans Group to Honor ‘Doonesbury’ Cartoonist:NEW YORK Vietnam Veterans of America will give “Doonesbury” creator Garry Trudeau its President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts July 14 during a VVA conference in Tucson, Ariz.A Doonesbury.com note discussed the upcoming award and the perception of some critics that Trudeau has an “anti-military bias” in his comic: “It may interest — if not confuse — these critics to learn that if Trudeau has such a bias, the military itself has failed to notice. During the first Gulf War, the Pentagon organized a touring exhibition of the ‘Doonesbury’ war strips, and during Trudeau’s visit to Kuwait, where he met hundreds of soldiers, he was awarded certificates of achievement by the Ready First Brigade and the 4th Battalion 67th Armor, which made him an ‘honorary Bandit for life.'”More recently, the DOD, USO, and VA have all worked closely with Trudeau on the strips depicting B.D.’s wounding in Iraq, and last December, Walter Reed Army Medical Center presented him with the Commander’s Award for Public Service, the third-highest civilian award given by the Army.
Cagle’s Web Log!:Every year the membership of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) votes on the “Golden Spike” award for the best cartoon that was killed by an editor which should not have been killed by an editor. This year’s winning spiked cartoon (below) is by Canadian cartoonist, Michael DeAdder of the Halifax Daily News.
In the Category of Best Artist Frank Cho has been nominated (for his work on the Shanna, “The She-Devil” comic book – not “Liberty Meadows”). In the Best cartoonist category we have John Kovalic with “Dork Tower”; in best Syndicated Strip of Panel we have Aaron McGruder for “The Boondocks” Keith Knight for “The K Chronicles,” Patrick McDonnell for “Mutts,” and lastly Stan Lee and Larry Leiber for “The Amazing Spider-Man.”The awards will be given out on September 9 during the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Last week I posted that the Great Lakes Chapter of NCS has posted photos of their excursion to Chicago. Craig Boldman, the current chairperson for the chapter writes into remind me (thus you) that the photos are being updated every day and that they have enough for several weeks.

Glenn said he would rather not win awards by snatching them away from his brother.Glenn’s previous Reubens include newspaper comic strip cartoonist of the year award for his syndicated cartoon, “The Duplex,” three greeting cards cartoonist of the year awards, two magazine cartoonist of the year awards, and an editorial cartoonist of the year award.Gary, who was nominated for the first time this year, joked that his brother only needed one more award to finish tiling his bathroom floor.Universal Press has also posted a press release regarding the McCoy wins.
