Jules Feiffer has been honored by the School of Visual Arts on Tuesday of this week. The school held a reception and dinner in his honor to kick off a new exhibit called The Masters Series: Jules Feiffer. The exhibit contains works of art that span his 50 year career of cartoons, illustrations and water colors.
The weekly New York Press has named Ruben Bolling’s Tom the Dancing Bug Manhattan’s Best Comic Strip. The paper’s yearly “Best of Manhattan Reader Poll” was published September 27.
It’s that time of year again when the leaves turn colors and notices of deadlines for cartooning awards are being distributed throughout the community. First up is the Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award. Deadline is in December. It has a $10k payoff to the winner.
Chad Lowe has taken first place in editorial cartooning in the 2006 Florida Press Club Excellence in Journalism contest for the 90,000+ circulation category. The awards will be presented to the winners on Oct. 21 in West Palm Beach.
I’m assuming that anyone who’d be interested in entering this competition is already informed of the coming deadline, but for the sake of complete coverage…The deadline for the National Press Foundation’s Berryman Award for Editorial Cartooning is this Friday (Oct. 6).
Chris Britt of the The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Illinois won first place for editorial cartoon in the latest Illinois Press Association competition.

From E&P comes news that Jerry Robinson will be the keynote speaker this Saturday at the Harvey Awards. Jerry is a past president of the NCS, founder of the Cartoonists & Writers Syndicate, as well as a former comic book artist who created Joker and named Robin in the Batman series.

E&P has a pretty good behind the scenes story that was first reported by R.C. Harvey. Is it goes, Mike Luckovich’s Reuben trophy did not arrive in Chicago in time for the award ceremony and so NCS organizers dropped back to plan ‘B’ – borrow a trophy from a previous award winner.
Steve Moore, creator of In the Bleachers, has received the inaugural Certificate of Recognition from the Boston University Athletic Training Program for his “[accuracy] in his portrayal of the athletic training profession.
Leigh Rubin’s Rubes collection book “The Wild Life of Cats” has won two humor awards according to E&P. The first award is a merit prize from Midwest Book Awards and the other is a bronze award by ForeWord magazine’s Book of the Year.
From Editorialcartoonists.com comes news that Stephan Templeton has won first place in editorial cartooning in the 2006 Excellence in Journalism Award from the Philadelphia Society of Professional Journalists. Templeton draws for the Intelligencer.
Additionally, SW Parra has taken first place in editorial cartooning from the 2005 Better Newspapers Contents by the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
On the surface one would wonder why the Vietnam Veteran’s of America would ever give an unapologetic anti-war activist, Garry Trudeau an award, but last week, Garry received the President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts for his work to support the soldiers who have little control over where and when they are deployed around the world.
The Cartoon Network?s animated series, “Boondocks,”has been nominated for a 2006 Teen Choice Award in the category of ?Choice TV Show: Animated.? The series is based on Aaron McGruder?s comic strip, The Boondocks, syndicated by Universal Press. McGruder serves as creator and executive producer of the show.
