The firehose of Trumpian foolishness often results in a whole lot of versions of the same gag.But his bizarre, unhinged two-hour ramble in front of the Conservative Political Action Committee gathering yielded, besides Eugene Robinson’s horrified response, (and this one, and this one, and others) this weird photo and, from that, a boatload of cartoons […]
Agnes welcomes me home from a four-day road trip with a reminder of why I do this: It’s for the fabulous wealth you can generate simply by being massively discontent. The trip out to Denver for a training session with my young reporters felt like I was visiting some beleaguered revolutionary holdouts. The day before the […]
Recently, I heard Matthew Diffee describe his descent into cartooning on the Moth, and, while I was tempted to pass it on right away, I already knew that I had a 7:10 morning flight coming up in a few days and that there was no way I’d get a blog written and posted plus make […]
Harry Bliss continues a tradition, having purchased JD Salinger’s secluded digs in Cornish, NH.For years, some of the local folks simply pretended to not know much, while others took perverse delight in sending Salinger groupies on long wild-goose chases in order to preserve their neighbor Jerry’s privacy. But, whether by omission or commission, the whole community […]
Today’s “Pardon My Planet” falls under the “Funny As Cancer” category.I’m two-and-a-half years out, which means I’m only halfway to being officially “cured,” but my checkups have become more like reunions, because the scans are clear and we just chat for a little while and set up the next one.It carries a bit of survivors’ […]
I still don’t understand how deadlines work for political cartoonists. There are cartoonists leaping to the fray with each wrinkle in the news and there are those who draw cartoons that sit for weeks.Sure, some are full-time and some have other duties, but do the cartoonists in that second group really have no ability to […]
RJ Matson offers one of the more neutral cartoons regarding Michael Cohen’s planned appearance today before the House Oversight Committee.Cohen blew a previous plea bargain by lying, and, as all fans of “Law & Order” (the TV show, not necessarily the concept) know, it’s standard procedure to attempt to impeach any witness — even an honest […]
David Rowe on the conviction, in an Australian court, of George Cardinal Pell for sexually assaulting choir boys.Rowe has a well-earned reputation for amusingly ghastly depictions of people, but I think he wisely recognized that there’s no need for it this time, and that linked article, though a model of objective reporting, is horrific enough […]
I’m in the mood to pick nits and perhaps fights this morning, and Drew Litton has the misfortune to serve up a slow, underhand ball with what is a frequent complaint: “Outrageous Player Salaries.”My usual response when football fans rant about this is to suggest they check with the 67,042 people who pay to watch […]
We’ll lead off today with snippets of things you should go check out, starting with Ann Telnaes’s longer piece on the conference about sexual abuse at the Vatican. Or the conference at the Vatican about sexual abuse.Whichever. It is well-worth the click.Signe Wilkinson takes up a piece of that argument, agreeing with Telnaes that it’s […]
Kal Kallaugher describes a central issue in the campaign to “Make America Great Again” that goes beyond border walls and is at the heart of a whole lot of issues we’re dealing with.America as a “Melting Pot” derives from a 1908 play by Israel Zangwill, an immigrant from Britain who was, himself, the son of […]
How better to kick off a Friday Funnies than with a Juxtaposition screen shot to show exactly how it fell on my page?I had already given Arctic Circle a superior chuckle, because my boy Vaska is quite the opposite and does not want to go out at all in foul weather.Fortunately, ridgebacks have iron bladders […]
When I gave the advice “Dare to be stupid!” what I meant was that silly jokes are fun. I wasn’t advising deliberate stupidity in the political realm, which is disloyal. There is spin, and Adam Zyglis mocks the spin of those who don’t mind running up a deficit for a wall, but who can’t see how […]
(Rip Kirby)(Big Ben Bolt)Call this the “Juxtaposition of Nagging.” Over in the Vintage section at Comics Kingdom, Rip Kirby is just starting a new adventure, while Ben Bolt is at the climax of another.Offering these classic strips to those who pony up $20 a year to subscribe is better than a tote bag and a […]
We start with a mere fragment of an Existential Comics episode, the rest of which is hilarious, in which a procession of philosophers question Aladdin’s “princeness” and, hence, the genie’s honesty and/or competence. This cartoon pits my hatred of plot holes against my hatred of metaphysics, which makes for an interesting cage match. The traditional first meeting […]
