Times Follows Up P.C. Vey Obit With Ask for Veyesque Cartoons

The New York Times ran an obituary for cartoonist P.C. Vey by Michael S. Rosenwald or here).

New York Times headline for P.C. Vey obituary

“P.C. Vey, whose cheerfully pessimistic cartoons in The New Yorker depicted the inescapable absurdity of romantic relationships, corporate life, hoity-toity restaurants, cats, health care, technology, greed and death, died on Sept. 17 at his home in Amherst, Mass. He was 70.”

The obituary described Vey’s cartoons as, “Vey’s characters had long faces, bulging eyes and a knack for wise, fatalistic quips. The style was sui generis; the gags, gently savage” and The Times followed that up with a request for cartoons in the style of Vey (or here).

P.C. Vey

“We’re inviting readers to share original cartoons of their own that, like Mr. Vey’s, find humor in the absurdities of everyday life.”

“Working at his desk in the East Village, in New York, he drew dozens of cartoons a week and submitted them in batches of 20 to the magazine’s editors.

“Good news: We don’t want dozens of your cartoons!

“We want one — your best one — by Oct. 20. We may publish it in a forthcoming article.”

  1. Unfortunately, the terms do not specifically prohibit the use of AI, but there is a clause that could be broadly interpreted as a de facto restriction: “Your Content does not plagiarize or otherwise infringe any third party copyright, moral rights or any other intellectual property rights…”
