Hal Foster’s magnum opus Prince Valiant began on February 13, 1937 and is nearing its 90th anniversary.
To celebrate King Features is adding the complete Prince Valiant canon on the Comics Kingdom site.
Praised for both the narrative and the art Hal Foster’s comic strip is considered to be the top of the art form.
“Foster’s epic feature brought a new level of artistic excellence to the medium. With the freedom to write original stories and develop distinctive characters, Foster created a fantastic world of knights and maidens, adventure and romance, and made it believable with historical detail and majestic scenery.”
Over the next several months Comics Kingdom will be adding pages to the Prince Valiant archives and feature articles about the famed comic strip. At present the archives are rather spotty though as said they do now begin with the debut through 1938. It then jumps to the John Cullen Murphy years of 1980 – 1984 and then to the 21st Century strips from 1996 to present. And yes a subscription to Comics Kingdom is required to read them all (or buy them as collected in hardcover from Fantagraphics).
“Every release adds another era. By February 13, 2027, the full Prince Valiant archive will be ready to explore.”
