The Cartoonists’ Coop or Co-op

A roundup of cartooning news with Drew Panckeri, Liza Donnelly and Kathleen Hughes and friends, Ralph Steadman, Mort and Brian Walker, and the threesome of Jason Chatfiled, Ann Telnaes, and Patrick Chappatte.

A bit of serendipity

Our recent posting of Linus getting a library card in Peanuts is followed up by cartoonist Drew Panckeri being profiled after redesigning the Westwood Free Public Library library card. From The Press’ John Snyder:

WESTWOOD—Patrons of the Westwood Free Public Library—of all ages—are in for a treat with the library’s newly redesigned card. Interpreted by illustrator, cartoonist, and longtime library user Drew Panckeri, it’s a slim, pure piece of Westwood that does what a library does best: invite you in, then send you out with something new.

Panckeri, who since 2015 has published hundreds of single-panel cartoons with the likes of The New Yorker, MAD magazine, and WIRED, says that “drawing came naturally as a child, spending many days in school quietly concerned with the world inside a notebook, making friends laugh with MAD-style parodies…

Panckeri told Pascack Press that the past year has been a welcome shift: after years drawing single-panel cartoons for magazines, he’s now leaning hard into children’s books…

Women Laughing

Women Laughing roundtable

Women Laughing is a short documentary film:

“Inspired by her acclaimed book Very Funny Ladies and Liza’s own biography, the film also looks back at the fascinating history and evolution of single panel cartoons- from the 1920s, to the present- and reveals how far women have come in a field historically dominated by men.”

If you are in the New York City, or will be soon, Michael Maslin has listed some screenings coming to the area:

Steadman Way Out West

Ralph Steadman – And Another Thing…

For us on the West Coast we have the Ralph Steadman: And Another Thing… exhibit hitting the L.A. area.

The exhibition showcases his diverse body of work, from iconic illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” and Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” to collections like “The Gonzovation Trilogy,” created in collaboration with documentarian and filmmaker Ceri Levy to raise awareness about endangered species. Featured works include nine portraits of U.S. Presidents, over 20 images of famous people, including T.S. Eliot, Karl Marx, Virginia Woolf, and George Orwell, and “Vintage Dr. Gonzo,” a life-size bronze sculpture.

The March 28, 2026 exhibit opening is previewed by a month long Gonzo Art Trail:

We’re inviting you to take part in the Gonzo Art Trail by joining in for as many missions, meet-ups, and art activations as you can. The Gonzo Art Trail app launches on March 1, 2026, at noon Pacific Time, and everyone is welcome. It’s free and fun to join.

Comics Lexicon

Brian Walker and The Lexicon of Comicana

For those of us unwilling to leave the comfort of our ergonomic computer chair there is Brian Walker‘s virtual presentation of Mort Walker’s The Lexicon of Comicana courtesy of The Billy Ireland:

Join us on Thursday, March 5 on at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom for a virtual presentation on The Lexicon of Comicana with cartoonist and curator Brian Walker.

A new edition of this classic book has been recently published by New York Review Comics. It includes a foreword by Chris Ware and a meticulous appendix by Mort’s son Brian, who delves deep into the visual language of comics. Brian will be giving a virtual presentation on this project as part of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum’s participation in Will Eisner Week, an international celebration held on the week of Eisner’s birthday.

FREE! Registration is required.

Entretien a Trois

Draw Me Anything with Jason Chatfield, Ann Telnaes, and Patrick Chappatte

Internationally we have Australian-American cartoonist Jason Chatfield hosting Swedish-American cartoonist Ann Telnaes and Lebanese-Swiss cartoonist Patrick Chappatte on an episode of Draw Me Anything. Tomorrow February 18 at 12 noon est.

We will cover a lot — including:

– The reality of drawing authoritarianism in 2026.

– The themes I touched on in our previous chat, specifically, how the intersection of tech oligarchy and political power is changing the landscape for critics.

– How to keep drawing when the subjects of your drawings would very much prefer you didn’t.

and much, much more.
