Washington Post cartoon contest announces winner

  1. Mike, I assume you’ve seen the work of the new Hilary wannabe …Olivia Walch, winner of the Wash Post’s “America’s Next Great Cartoonist” contest. Her stuff is very Rhymes With-ish…it’ll be interesting to see if she can go beyond a great contest entry to produce consistently funny gags.

  2. The one I preferred was voted off the island in the first round, and I didn’t like any of the Sundays that wrote about doing comic strips. But a lot of single-panel features have trouble figuring out to do on Sunday — do you just do a larger version of your daily strip, do you save more complex art for the larger pallette, or do you break into panels? In any case, there’s a reason for six months or a year of development before release. She’s promising, but she’s not there yet. And that’s fine; that’s where she should be at this stage.
