My laughter over today's Cleats may be a more personal reaction than on most days. I just finished an article on "The World's Largest Swimming Lesson," which was held last week by waterparks around the world to promote water safety. One of the things I learned was that the vast majority of features at a waterpark do not require you to know how to swim. The vast majority of real waterholes, of course, do.
If you work at a newspaper in a town with an amusement park, one of the big stories of spring is the annual testing of the rides. It's interesting the first time you cover it. After that, I kind of like Bill Hinds' take on it — and I promise, you'd have no trouble recruiting people.
I could be wrong, of course. I sometimes fail to understand all this stuff. Some years ago, when all the concern over this sort of thing was new, I was staying at a friend's house overnight and, in the morning, used their shampoo in the shower. As I stood there before my morning coffee, I looked at the label and read, "This shampoo has not been tested on animals" and it took me a minute to realize they were bragging. I had thought it was a disclaimer.
