President Trump has made known his desire to spread United States control around the world. He has mentioned making Canada, Greenland, Mexico, The Panama Canal area, and Cuba U.S. territories or states. Beyond the Western Hemisphere he has stated wishes to rule The Gaza Strip and Iran, even Iceland. He has, for all intents and purposes, taken sovereignty over Venezuela.
It is that last where he proudly posted the cover of the August 14, 2026 issue of Newsweek International on his Truth Social account. The cover proclaims in large letters “Trump Was Right.” The article “Trump Was Right. Six Months Post-Maduro, Venezuelan Recovery Defies Critics” (or here) is laudatory to Trump, his administration, and the oil companies that rushed to Venezuela following Madura’s ouster by the U.S. (The article notes the hundreds of millions of dollars returned to Venezuela from U.S. controlled accounts but makes no mention of the billions of dollars still floating in limbo.)
The cover shows Trump stance spanning the Gulf of Mexico and The Carribean Sea from the U.S. to South America, specifically Venezuela. It is a fantastic illustration by Mona Eing and Michael Meissner. It riffs off an 1892 Punch illustration by Edward Linley Sambourne.
Though Trump insists he is an inveterate reader and a student of history it is well-known that he is neither.
So sites not particularly favorable to the President are mocking his showcasing the Imperialistic Trump.
One example is Natalie Fear at Creative Bloq:
From a Trump-eye view, it’s easy to see how, superficially, this could seem like a flattering depiction. His towering stature, confident face, and the admittance that “Trump was right” (about Venezuela, at least) seem like a triumph, but that’s far from the truth.
The cover is actually inspired by a satirical illustration of businessman Cecil Rhodes, created for the British magazine Punch. Dating back to 1892, “The Rhodes Colossus” is a famous satirisation of British imperialism, mocking Rhode’s immense corporate greed. In short, no Trump, that Newsweek cover isn’t a compliment.
There is a problem with their scornful derision – they are assuming that Trump would take offense at being labeled an imperialist or colonizer. My take is that he would proudly wear either label.
