Comic Strips

Lazin’ On a Sunday Afternoon

Some notes on newspaper comic strips from the past week.

King Features Gets Into the Foodservice Business

It is not unusual for Zippy to visit a diner, though he did so in five of the six dailies this week. And the Motel Cafe has been the center of the Rex Morgan universe for three months now. Then we have Judge Parker stopping by his local eatery (Nick’s Diner – the same one that is in Rex Morgan’s hometown?) for a week.

Too bad Jiggs didn’t show up at Dinty Moore’s on Tuesday.

Memorial Day

There were a number of Memorial Day honoring our fallen heroes – Frazz, The Born Loser, Gil Thorp, Pluggers, Mallard Fillmore, and Prickly City. So it was strange that sharing the comics pages with those tributes was Dustin joking about military service for the better part of the Memorial Day week.

Still on the subject of paying homage to those who went before we have Slylock Fox.

While I can imagine the owl being Howland, the alligators are far from being Albert.

Synchronicity

Yeah. Guys age at a normal pace, the maturation process not so much.

We just have a hard time letting go of the good times. Ahh, to young during summer vacation!

Cartoonists Cartooning Cartoonists

I’m a sucker for cartoonists turning their pens and styli on themselves.

Wayno® says this is the fourth installment of “Cartoonists Frequently Asked Questions.”

Miscellaneous

Still don’t understand why Comics Kingdom insists on running Mary Worth, and only Mary Worth of the story strips, in quarter page format rather than as a half page.

I was this many years old when I found out Wally is on the same level of simpatico as Over the Hedge’s Hammie.

A King Features amalgam of warriors.

With a special guest appearance by Conrad, who should be making regular cameos in The Grizzwells.

Future crossover?

Barney Google’s 107th anniversary is next month (June 17) and I hope Jim Scancarelli and John Rose have collaborated with Barney and Snuffy appearing in Gasoline Alley and Walt and Skeezix appearing simultaneously in the Barney Google and Snuffy Smith strip.

  1. The best “Pogo” match in that Slylock strip is the mouse, who is not just the same species as Kelly’s Ol’ Mouse, but also wears the same kind of hat.
