Minnesota Cartoonists Mobilize to Share ICE Abuses in Their Communities

Alarmed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement impact in their communities, Minnesota cartoonists have launched an effort to spread the word about ICE’s abuses and to call on other artists to share what they are witnessing in their own communities.

The seed of this movement came from graphic novelist K. Woodman-Maynard after she created an editorial for The Washington Post about her experience living in Minneapolis with the surge of ICE agents in her city. After the positive response to the WaPo piece and the deteriorating conditions in her city, she felt the need to do more.

From her Substack:

I saw that my friends in other states didn’t know the severity of the situation here. I thought of Art Spiegelman’s Maus and what an impact it had in depicting something incredibly painful—the Holocaust—but still people read it and the comics format has a lot to do with that.

After brainstorming with other Minnesota cartoonists Jason Walz, and Trung Le Nguyen, along with Nate Powell, graphic novelist of the civil rights icon John Lewis’ March trilogy, the hashtag #iceoutcomics was born—a grassroots effort to “call out to cartoonists and artists to make four-panel comics about the personal impact I.C.E. is having on their lives.”

So far the #iceoutcomics hashtag is getting the most traction on Bluesky and Instagram. Below are a select panel from each of the artists that have posted work at the time of this writing. Click on the artist’s name to read their entire story.

If you want to follow the effort, K is sharing what is being posted.

From K’s SubStack, here are the instructions for those who want to tell their stories:

If you’re a cartoonist or artist, we invite you share your own four panel comics about your experience with how ICE has impacted your life.

Details:
– Four panel comics
– 3:4 dimensions (Instagram format)
– Use this blue : HEX 6cc1e6 (and black ink if you want)
– Take a screen grab of the last slide [see slide below] in this post to include as the fifth panel in your comic to help spread the word.
– Share with these hashtags: #iceoutcomics #iceout[insert your city] Example: #iceoutmpls

Let’s try to get these out in the world FAST so people can see what’s going on.

[UPDATE] If you have a personal experience about the impact of ICE that you’d like to share, but aren’t an artist yourself, please look in the comments for an artist looking to connect. You could comment on their message and then DM them and see if it’s a good fit.

Of course, we can’t vet everyone so only collaborate with someone you’re comfortable with.

And likewise, if you’re an artist who doesn’t have personal experience and would like to contribute, comment here and someone might reach out.

This is a call for original art, not AI generated.
