Let’s start with the fun stuff and move to other topics later, and here’s a Brevity that doesn’t call for any commentary except to note that, while Dan Thompson is the best punster on the funny pages, this is over-the-top even for him, not simply making the pun but logically drawing in the lyrics that […]
There are always a lot of turkey-pardoning cartoons at Thanksgiving, but this year they had the Khashoggi murder to work in, which lifted them above the usual, though not necessarily above each other. What was more interesting was to see how many conservative cartoonists broke ranks to criticize Trump over this murderous buddy-buddy act.But L’il Donnie […]
Dog-walking in the city is different than dog-walking in the country. Our dog walkers pile their gang into the back of the car and take them out to a trail somewhere. It means they have to keep their numbers down, because four or five dogs running loose is enough keep track of, but the dogs […]
I don’t often argue with Frazz, but I’d take a spoonful of the candied yams and several of the green bean casserole, neither of which I would ever want on any day but this. (Well, on Christmas, but that’s a culinary instant replay.)Eldest son is scaling down the feast this year, but I hope he’ll […]
It’s easy enough to aim chants of “Lock Her Up!” at Ivanka, and several cartoonists have, but Tom Toles wins for drilling down to the appalling level of blind, egocentric privilege in which this little girl has lived all her life. The Trump loyalists are explaining about how it’s different if you have a server in […]
Today’s Agnes is just plain silly, but it made me laugh because, I thought, there probably is a reason for the poofy hats, only I just looked it up and the reason, as I kind of suspected, is a combination of tradition, pretension and dubious folklore. But it put me in mind of the National Comedy […]
Ed Hall is right, and so was I.The problem is climate change, but people are still seizing on the one remark in which Trump — for maybe the first time in his life — got something right.Still, as Hall notes, good forest management can’t overcome climate change, even if the nitwit who recommends it were […]
You may recall when Al Gore claimed that he invented the Internet and everyone giggled. It became a punchline, and Gore was branded a liar.Except that he hadn’t made the claim and, besides, he genuinely had been a significant sponsor of legislation to advance its development. And Vice President Dan Quayle, on a classroom visit, was […]
I don’t expect a coherent theme to emerge today, so we’ll start with a Tank McNamara of great social significance and then see what’s next.I remember when, back well before the Internet or anything like it, the Sporting News would show up on the doorstep with its analysis of the most recent World Series game, […]
But first this …When I drop subtle hints that newspaper editors are cloth-eared, humorless dweebs who ought not to be in charge of selecting comics, here’s how it comes down elsewhere in the paper.Back in the days when papers had budgets, editors would have conventions where they’d make stupid collective decisions, like the time they […]
The flow of inspiration from the Trump firehose has been such that I just want to flush it out now, hit Friday Funnies tomorrow, and hope for new things by Saturday. But, before that, Tom the Dancing Bug deserves praise for being able to bundle so much fraud and stupidity into a single, inventive, multi-panel cartoon, […]
I referenced Daniel Patrick Moynihan the other day, who is mostly famous for saying that you are entitled to your own opinions but not to your own facts.Moynihan died in 2003, so he only got to see the initial Newt Gingrich portion of the fact-free revolution, and thus could argue that there are facts and […]
I wasn’t planning to run any more Veteran’s Day rain strips, but this L’il Donnie ought not to go unremarked. There have been several strips on the topic, but, as I predicted the other day, even the ones that are above average already feel stale. The outrage was Saturday and, while I noted the barriers to […]
Jeremy Banx offers the only Armistice-Remembrance-Veterans Day cartoon you’ll ever need, reminding us that the only thing that can stop 2 or 3 million bad guys with guns is 3 or 4 million good guys with guns.Which may or may not be true, but if we can’t even agree on what the day is called […]
David Rowe does have the advantage of a half-day time difference, but I was surprised to find him one of so few to respond instantly to Trump’s decision to skip the 100th Anniversary of the End of WWI because of what is reported to have been a light rain. And it’s a nice merge of the […]
