The Week That Was in Comic Land
Skip to commentsLove the locations in today’s Thatababy except when it strayed from comic strip titles. I’ll let Slumberland pass as that was in the title. And I understand Lemon putting Moo in there, but I wonder if that is when he took the detour. There are no comic strips called Camp Swampy, Okefenokee Swamp, Dingburg, and a few others. Without even going outside strips currently listed on syndicate sites Olive and Popeye could have been rowing to Thimble Theatre, Billy could have been wandering down Mark Trail, instead of Okefenokee Swamp draw KidTown, replace Dogpatch with The Barn and Grumbles with Safe Havens.
Seeing King Aroo and The Little King at Id’s castle, the Pearls’ crocodile with Pogo in the swamp, Boner’s Ark in the bay, and other appearances by various characters.
Is that dolphin a character I’m not recognizing?
More surprise appearances.
Lemon again with a strip making the wish that newspaper strips will regain their rightful place in the hierarchy along with spoofing some comics (“two way hip replacement”!). I can guess at numbers 2 and 4, but #1 and #3?
Meanwhile The “Reubin” Award makes an appearance and causing me to wonder if cartoonist Scancarelli has a two month lead time for Gasoline Alley.
And Now For Something Completely Different…

Donna A. Lewis went off the beaten path this week with Reply All Lite issuing a series of Baby Bear Cards.
Or Not
The back and forth between Winky and Dr. Mel could just as well be Frank and Ernest who also happened in space today with the word play they made famous.
Future Funnies (with Spoilers)

Coming up in next week of Flash Gordon Dan Schkade treats us to a guided tour of the planet Mongo and its many nations and lands. Not included in the travelogue is the Sky City of the Hawkmen – see above.

When I saw Alex Simmons signature on the Tarzan Sunday reruns a month ago I was pleased to know that Gray Morrow’s 18 year run would soon end. (Blasphemy: I’ve never been a fan of Morrow on most of his comic strip projects – Barbara Cartland Romances being an exception.)
There is one more Sunday by Morrow next weekend and then we will get the more savage apeman as drawn by Eric Battle – though it will only last for 9 months before the end times for the Tarzan comic strip occurs. After that we will see if GoComics and ERB Inc. go back to the Archie Goodwin/Gil Kane stories as they did in 2002 or maybe start with the Russ Manning Sundays from 1968.
Since the strip is not syndicated to newspapers any more space proportions are no longer a concern so I’d like to see them run the rarer Bob Lubbers and John Celardo Sundays of 1950-1968.
More From the Past
While Saturday’s MUTTS is copyrighted 2026 it is a rerun. A change in dietary intakes creates a minor change. (The Tuesday Oct. 20th strip will also have a 2026 copyright due to a change in the last panel script.)
Back Where We Started
Take a body, share a body!!??

Friday saw The Barn and Barney & Clyde reference comic strips as they followed each other in my GoComics feed.
The feature image is a panel from the Oct. 18, 2026 Rabbits Against Magic.
