Let’s set a bit of a holiday mood with Barney & Clyde, which has always had a bit of a Frank Capra tone. The difference is that the cartoon strip appears every day and Capra worked in an era in which most movies were self-contained and had finite endings. There was no “It’s Still A Wonderful […]
Here’s a cartoon from Mike Keefe and an explanation from me of today’s headline. We had a pair of brilliant musical wits working as counselors at summer camp who collaborated on a hilarious play in which the King was a tyrannical nitwit, and I wish I could remember all the lyrics to his grand processional, which […]
Here’s an unusual start: On the left is Jeff Stahler’s “Moderately Confused” for today, on the right is a picture he posted of the kitchen on a cruise he took recently.A lot of cartoonists are also graphic designers or commercial artists, but a lot aren’t, and it’s worth pointing out that there is more than […]
I’ll confess to not having watched the funeral yesterday, but, from what I’ve seen of the commentary and photos and a few videos, Tim Eagan has grasped an aspect, if not the main thrust, of the event.I like funerals, because grief eliminates a lot of inhibitions, and so you have not only laughter, but sweet […]
Jimmy Johnson has a dedicated following, but it was still ballsy of him to produce a comic using only Arlo & Janis’s former hairstyles as an indicator that it’s set in the past.I’m just pointing it out, not criticizing it, and he’s crafted a cartoon that stands up even if you didn’t realize it was […]
Pros and Cons puts matters in a way I like: Whimsical on the surface, darker inside. It’s a good starting point for today’s post. The face you present to a jury and the face your friends and relations see might be an extreme example, but much in your life depends, I think, on the distance between […]
Let’s get the political piece out of the way first: In today’s Non Sequitur, Wiley Miller comments on the new rules for press briefings at the White House.I’m okay with the new format, not because it’s a victory for press freedom, of course, except to the degree that it is.I don’t believe in being overly […]
George HW Bush has died and Bob Englehart offers my favorite obituary cartoon on the topic, which is pretty muted and not terribly specific, but then so was GHWB.Bush always struck me as a behind-the-throne type, not a Number One Leader sort of person, and that’s not a slight: Somebody needs to keep all the […]
It’s no particular secret to Constant Readers that I’m a fan of Ann Telnaes, but when, quite some time ago, she began to simply add stacks to her “Nothingburger” cartoon base, I felt she was overplaying the concept. However, I may have missed the value of patience and of a sort of quiet relentlessness. This piece […]

Over at Comics Kingdom Vintage Strips, Big Ben Bolt has just wrapped up one adventure and is off on another. It’s a good time to jump on board, but it also made me wish life and international diplomacy were as simple as this fellow thinks. The strip is from August, 1958, so a certain young boxer […]
There have been a raft of cartoons using the Statue of Liberty to comment on the tear-gassing at the border, some quite good, others quite predictable, but I like Jim Morin‘s because it is unapologetic in admitting that we’ve left our values behind. That is, I get a nice emotional surge from the idea that the […]
Let’s at least start with something uplifting: Doc and Raider‘s lovely portrait of Montreal this time of year.Somebody was celebrating the resurgence of independent bookstores the other day and I made the point that, for all NYC types celebrate the original anchors, once Barnes & Noble and Borders went corporate, their big box stores did as […]
Stuart Carlson‘s piece could either be today’s lead-off or our wrap-up, but, wherever you place it, it stands as a catalog of the things the President really doesn’t know. Or claims not to know. Or claims not to believe. Or really doesn’t believe. It is a puzzlement, but Carlson gathers it all together and even leaves […]
Now that I’ve planted that nasty earworm, I’ll send you off to see the rest of this week’s Mo, which is always a pleasure but this week particularly apt.I’ve never been one of those people who hates Mondays, in part because I’ve had jobs I liked, in which case going to work was fine with […]
