Yesterday I mentioned David Horsey had taken first place for editorial cartooning in the Western Washington SPJ, but he’s not the only cartoonist to go home with an award. Milt Priggee who draws for the Puget Sound Business Journal has also took first place in the category of “cartoons” (meaning local business editorial cartoons) and again in “illustrations.”
Seattle Post-Intelligencer editorial cartoonist, David Horsey, has won first place in the Western Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Last week I mentioned the 2006 Glyph awards, of which three newspaper cartoonists Aaron McGruder, Darrin Bell and Keith Knight were up for “Best Comic Strip.”… Keith Knight with “The K Chronicles”Congratulations Keith.
Aaron McGruder, “Boondocks,” Darrin Bell, “Candorville,” and Keith Knight, “The K Chronicles” have been nominated for a Glyph award for Best Comic Strip by the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention. In addition to the Best Comics Strip nod, Aaron is also up for Best Writer and his character “Huey” is up for Best Male Character.The results will be announced tonight at the annual convention that runs today and tomorrow in Philadelphia, PA.Tim Jackson, editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Defender, Madison Times will be on one of the discussion panels.
As posted on the AAEC web site, Tim Menees, who was let go from his 30 years at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette job as editorial cartoonist, was awarded first place in the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s Golden Quill Journalism awards.
According to Lynn Johnston’s web site, the “For Better or For Worse” creator was recently honored by the Purina Animal Hall of Fame during a induction ceremony in Toronto…. Lynn and her dog character “Farley” received the special award for “chronicling the bond between people and their pets.”
This year’s Associated Press Society of Ohio award for editorial cartooning goes to Jim Borgman who is celebrating 30 years with the Cincinnati Enquirer. Second and third place go to Jeff Darcy of the Plain Dealer (Cleveland) and Chip Bok of the Akron Beacon Journal.Jerry King, who contributes editorial cartoons to The Independent, also took first place in editorial cartooning, presumably in a different circulation size category.
This year’s 38th annual Robert F. Kennedy Journalism award for editorial cartooning went to John Backderf an alternative newspaper cartoonist who draws the comic “The City.”From the press release:Derf aggressively attacks the institutions, ideologies and attitudes that create an environment for the continuing oppression and exploitation of the powerless.
This year’s John Locher award winner William Warren got some press in his own college newspaper where the sophomore does editorial cartoons. The story also contains the URL to William’s web site where you can see his editorial cartoons.
As if the Pulitzer and SPJ award was not enough – Mike Luckovich has won the Overseas Press Club award for editorial cartooning. The prize was given to two cartoonists this year.
From Jim Borgman’s blog comes news that he’s been named as a finalist in this year’s EPpy Award given out by Editor and Publisher.
