When the tenor of political debate seems to have become too much, Bad Reporter steps in to reassure you that you haven’t lost your marbles. It really is that bad out there. And I’ve gotta say it is getting depressing. On the one hand, it’s discouraging to think that anybody could take the notion of “Senator […]
I love the way Damien Glez, who is based in Burkina Faso, draws Sarkozy. Most Americans probably weren’t aware of his lack of height until the “tippy-toes” photo when he stood with the Obamas and his wife, but Glez makes it a key part of the caricature. It’s also appealing to have an international political cartoonist […]
It’s not the gag that kills in today’s Edison Lee — it’s the looks of horror on the kids’ faces.Coming up with a good gag is about one-eighth of the job. Delivery is everything else. There have been more than one occasion when a strip hasn’t made this page because, while the gag was good, […]
Dan Piraro is a bit of a greenie nag, but today’s Bizarro is not only well-crafted but brings up something that brings out my Andy Rooney side. And I hate sounding like Andy Rooney, but wotthehell. This may be a country-boy memory that my more urban contemporaries can’t relate to, but we spent a lot of […]
As has been noted here before, South Africa went almost immediately from the joy of hosting the World Cup into a constitutional crisis involving the government’s intent to impose restrictions on the press to avoid criticism and investigative reporting. Not surprisingly, many Madam & Eve strips since then have been tied to the specifics of […]
There is a talent for writing really stupid gags that shouldn’t be underestimated. Joe Martin has a talent for really lame, obvious, stupid jokes that get under your defenses and provoke a giggle. The guy throws a lot of mud at the wall, with three daily panels and some animations all going at once, but […]
Between Friends explains my approach to housekeeping, and why there isn’t any.
Ted Rall, Matt Bors and Steven Cloud are home from Afghanistan and Rall continues his journal of the trip here. This is an important document, since they were not on the Guided Tour. I don’t have any reason to think that the military is purposely misleading journalists who visit under more formal arrangements, but, when […]
The amazement, incredulity and puzzlement over the possibility of compromise should have been a clue that this tiny opening wasn’t going to last long enough to slip a cartoon through it. But I like Pat Oliphant’s talent for the jugular and his ability to use funny pictures to create an unfunny effect. And, on a political […]
I’m currently working on a newspaper serial story for young readers that takes place during Prohibition, and came across this cartoon while doing research. Well, we won’t be passing this one on to the kiddies, but if anyone recognizes the artist, I’d love to know who did it. The only thing that was posted on […]
One of the major rules in creating three-dimensional characters is to know more about them than you necessarily share. Comics are, for the most part, two-dimensional in both a graphic and a conceptual sense, with the characters having limited if any back-stories, and the back-stories that do exist being mostly an archive of episodes rather […]
This Cul de Sac comes a day after I ordered a couple of things for upcoming grandchild birthdays. I’m sure I’m just as tuned in to their interests as Alice’s dad.It was always like this with their parents.
In today’s Non Sequitur, Wiley Miller imagines a world in which people get what they ask for. The theoretical argument that we don’t need a nanny state tends to break down quickly as soon as some individual realizes that government exists for a purpose, and it isn’t simply to pave the roads. Or build nice […]
There are a number of cartoons about this topic floating around, but this is the one I liked most. Ed Stein was the editorial cartoonist at the Rocky Mountain News for about 30 years, until it folded, and he is now self-syndicating. His stuff is worth looking at, and that link will also give you […]
I’m generally hesitant to feature a strip twice within the same story arc, but, since story arcs at Pirate Cove can run on for a year or so, that’s not a rule I can expect to apply here. And, while the twice-a-month rule doesn’t exist anyway, I’m going to waive it here because today’s strip […]
