The other day, in discussing how web comics can be as obscure as they want to be, I used the absurd concept of a cartoon for oboeists. Now, patty has commented that, indeed, there is such a comic and provided a link. Not only is there such a comic, but there is a blog roll […]
Today’s Rubes would not be half so funny if the frog were not so deadpan throughout.
“Sheldon” is so often spot-on about literature that Dave Kellett has released a book of strips entirely on the subject. Well, a lot of the strips are about “Lord of the Rings,” but that’s as much literature as “Curious George” or “Moby Dick.”I’m not trying to start out the post with a product-plug, but it […]
I like it when a cartoonist reads my mind, and this New Year’s, I was suddenly struck by the number of things it’s supposed to be good luck to eat at the first of the year. And today, Bud Grace steps in with a “Piranha Club” that takes up that ball and runs with it. This […]
This particular installment isn’t exactly a boffo laff fest, but it’s a good strip-of-the-day for New Year’s, because it looks like Norm Feuti is moving “Retail” in a new direction for 2011. On his blog, he says, “After 5 years, I think it’s time to shake things up a little!”It makes me nervous because I […]
Top Ten lists exist because:A. It’s important to mark the highlights of the past 12 monthsB. People love lists, and it’s a holiday traditionC. Half the news staff is on vacation, as are all of the newsmakers.Clay Jones gives away the answer with that last “Top Ten” list of his: “Top Ten List of Ways […]
The defense lawyer in “Pros and Cons” has been attempting to impeach the prosecution’s witness by pointing out that he is earning a reward for the evidence he is providing. It hasn’t been going very well.
Faithful readers (mine or his) know that “Pooch Cafe” has been in flashback mode on weekdays since June, as Paul Gilligan depicts Poncho’s birth and puppyhood. It’s been an interesting experiment in freshening some of the plot points and characteristics which were assumed in the first place — now we’re seeing where they came from […]
Today’s Zits comes on the heels of an NPR article about how parenting styles affect drinking. The connection is a bit vague, except that the report says teens with parents who are too uncritical and teens with parents who are too controlling are both more apt to abuse alcohol. That sent me on a whole […]
While I don’t (knowingly) feature repeat strips except for the occasional “Classic,” I thought I’d pass on this tip: Dan (Rip Haywire) Thompson features vintage “Steve Canyon” at his website, and a new adventure is just beginning. Dan includes the Sundays, which makes a very large difference in following the stories and also features some […]
Perhaps today’s Non Sequitur doesn’t strike everyone the way it struck me, since I’m currently training a 12-week-old puppy and have moved into town where certain rules of canine sanitation apply. I’ve been referring to the puppy as “Health Club on a Rope” because I’m walking him five or six times a day, but, though […]
While some cartoonists let the holiday go by unmarked and others broke to run a Christmas card to readers, a few came up with some pretty good non-fruitcake gags. Here’s the best of the best: Retail (Norm Feuti)Real Life Adventures (Gary Wise and Lance Aldrich)Off the Mark (Mark Parisi)
Today’s Non Sequitur stands out in a crowd of fruitcake jokes and gags about kids attempting to mug Santa for his presents. But, the topic having been raised, where did “Mrs. Claus” come from, anyway? The only saints I can think of off the top of my head whose lives included marriage are Agnes, Barbara and […]
“Freshly Squeezed” is a comic strip by Ed Stein that went into syndication three months ago, but is based on a strip called “Denver Square” that he did for a little over a decade in the Rocky Mountain News.Which newspaper, you will note, no longer exists.Ed brought back the major characters from “Denver Square” […]
I’ve never understood that stupid song, and today’s Argyle Sweater points out why. Some things you don’t understand as a kid, but then, as you grow older, you realize what it’s all about. Having had the experience of a newborn in the house twice now, however, I understand this one even less. If Joseph were the […]
