Andy Donato’s Rejected Cartoon Led to Retirement
In a move reminiscent of Ann Telnaes quitting The Washington Post a relative of Andy Donato is saying that The Toronto Sun refused to run a Donato political cartoon and that was the reason for his retirement.
Donato’s cousin gave Toronto Mike the inside story of what happened:
“The gist of the story and the cartoon is simple. Andy and I last spoke on Sept. 8, a few days after he had submitted a drawing to be published on Sept. 6. It depicted Donald Trump with the signature little bird looking on. Trump had pulled the pin on a hand grenade and was throwing it. Andy described the cartoon as one of the best he had drawn in years…”
And so Donato’s final cartoon was the farewell cartoon.
P.C. Vey’s Final(?) New Yorker Cartoon
The Sept. 28, 2026 issue of The New Yorker carries a cartoon by P. C. Vey.
The recently deceased cartoonist Vey has a cartoon in the current issue of The New Yorker. Whether this is the last published Vey cartoon to appear in the magazine or there are more in their files remains to be seen.
The Fellowship of The Ring
Michael de Adder is now one of a select group of editorial cartoonists who have received from Terry Mosher the coveted Aislin Skull Ring. The skulls represent newspaper editors that the longtime cartoonists have survived.
According to Graeme MacKay the fellowship number MacKay himself, Guy Badeaux, Kevin Kallaugher, Ann Telnaes, Brian Gable, Serge Chapleau, Patrick Chappatte, Rod Emmerson, Wes Tyrell, Jack Ohman, Sue Dewar, Andy Donato, and Christian Vachon. Since MacKay’s list from last year at least Bruce MacKinnon and now de Adder have been honored. Any others? Is there a complete list?
