The Sunday Funnies Salad
Skip to commentsSome new information, at least for me

Philip Potempa for The Post-Tribune/Chicago Tribune passes on a hamburger soup recipe (or here) and as an introduction to the dish he recalls the Wimpy character from the Thimble Theatre comic strip. In that process he mentions the distribution numbers of the current Popeye comic strip:
“Once seen in more than 600 newspapers and publications around the globe, King Features says today the “Popeye” comic appears in 20 newspapers in the U.S. for Sunday feature strips as well as an additional eight newspapers which run the daily storyline strip.”
I would guess that the weekly Olive & Popeye comic from King Features Weekly Service run in about the same number of papers as the daily Popeye does.
While we’re showing title panels…

Tom Armstrong has a habit of rotating the Marvin Sunday title panel to align with that week’s circumstances. So it was that we came upon today’s Garfield.
Curiously that was the only Odie appearance in the strip.
Future Funnies:

For the next week Rosebuds has been renamed Madame Maria Magnifica’s Horrorscopes of Misfortune at least in the daily’s first panel, with an introduction to the arc in today’s Sunday.
Spoiler: Next Sunday Rosebuds will feature a title panel by a special guest artist.
Elsewhere the past was recalled
Did Tuesday’s Broom-Hilda remind anyone else of a comic strip from the past?

The first thing we see in Broom-Hilda is the sun peeking out from the upper left corner of the panel which instantly brought to my mind the cult favorite comic strip Odd Bodkins by Dan O’Neill.
Does it seem to anybody else that the current Dick Tracy story is reading more like a “Minit Mysteries” than a regular Eric Costello story?
Fourth Wall Funnies
Lincoln Pierce had Big Nate recalling Halloweens far beyond his years, while Caroline Cash had Nancy characters subbing for her for the better part of the week. Cash crashing the 4th wall is getting to be a regular part of the comic. As it is with The Fusco Brothers:
And Gary McCoy joins in the meta mischief:
While B. Kliban shows us that the concept is a longstanding tradition:
If Wayno® is reading this there’s a Kliban pipe for you.
Miscellaneous
Old Man Funnies.
Dana Summers is only a few years older than I am but his comic this week brought to mind the comic strips of the 1970s using hippies’ dress and their lifestyles, as the old cartoonists saw it, as the butt of their gags.
The Baldo storyline with Tia Carmen getting involved continues into the coming week.
By the way –
