The Economist is reporting the death of Graeme James (or here), the magazine’s cover designer since 1995.
THEY SAY never to judge a book by its cover. But The Economist is defined by the face it shows the world. For most of the past 30 years that has been the charge of our designer, Graeme James, a dear friend and colleague who has died after a long fight against cancer.
Graeme brought our words and arguments to life. Because we have four geographical editions, each of which may lead with a different story, he designed over 2,500 covers. That was an awful lot of free trade and globalisation for one pair of shoulders to bear.
As our weekly Wednesday-night deadline drew near, he would work with illustrators to refine ideas. He would also hammer out the details with frequently literal-minded editors—encounters that provoked Graeme to mutter the odd curse. If an article goes wrong, there is a substitute. Graeme had no safety-net. He had to get it right every time.
In 2021 The Economist art director Stephen Petch explained the arraignment in an interview with Mag Culture:
The setup is different from what I’ve been used to in the past. The Economist has a dedicated cover designer (Graeme James) who has been at the magazine for over 25 years. As you can imagine he is a bit of an institution.
The cover process begins with the Friday editorial meeting, in which section editors will pitch ideas for leaders to the editor. At this point, we usually have a good idea of what’s going on the cover (or multiple covers), but this can change over the weekend.
Today (Monday), we’ll have another editorial meeting, just to firm things up. Later in the afternoon, Graeme will organise a meeting in which he will present ideas to a cohort of senior editors, myself and ‘Head of Graphics’, Graham Douglas.

Graeme James has worked as the Cover designer for The Economist since 1995. Previously he was a book cover designer for Pan Macmillan Ltd. Graeme has a BA in Graphic design from Maidstone College of Art.
The brought a show of grief and love from illustrators that dealt with Graeme.
So sad to hear that legendary cover designer Graeme James has left us. I had the privilege of collaborating with him on more than two hundred Economist covers over a decade and a half. His wit, irreverence and visual acuity – not to mention his extreme perfectionism – produced an almost unbroken run of timeless classics, and we became good friends in the process. So long Graeme, and slán abhaile.
I loved working for Graeme on the Economist covers, it was always a tight deadline but he was so creative and so enthusiastic that it never felt hard, he was a true champion of illustration and I’ll miss him. R.I.P mate.
I will never forget being asked to illustrate Britannia holding a fork with spaghetti for a cover comparing Britain and Italy. The cover was going well but with an hour left until the deadline I was asked to change the face to Liz Truss, then with half an hour to go Graeme asked me to turn her shield into a pizza! It turned out to be a very controversial cover and made international news. Graeme was always pushing for more, always keeping you on your toes and willing you to make artworks as good as they could me. A master of big ideas with an eye for finest details. R.I.P. Graeme. What a career!

I was saddened to learn that a long time colleague and chum from The Economist had recently passed away.
For much of 30 years, Graeme James was the brilliant cover designer for The Economist. According to this lovely obituary of him in The Economist, Graeme had designed over 2500 covers for the publication.
I had the honor of working alongside Graeme for more than 100 of those covers.
Over the decades, when I got the call on a Monday morning from Graeme, I knew I was in for an exciting few days. A cover was in the works…
